U.S. Raid in Somalia Frees Hostages - WSJ.com

An elite U.S. special-operations team parachuted into Somalia early Wednesday morning in a daring and successful nighttime raid to free an American and Danish hostage.

The special-operations forces rescued U.S. citizen Jessica Buchanan and Poul Thisted of Denmark in the early morning hours Wednesday in the vicinity of Gadaado, Somalia, the U.S. military's Africa Command said.
During the raid, the rescue team found the hostages, guarded by nine people. All nine of the captors were killed during the assault; the captives were found unharmed, according to the U.S. military.
A pirate who gave his name as Bile Hussein told the AP he had spoken to pirates at the scene of the raid and they reported that nine pirates had been killed and three are missing. He said the raid had been very quick and caught the guards as they were sleeping after having chewed the narcotic leaf qat for much of the evening. Qat is a stimulant but users often sleep heavily after hours of chewing.

A second pirate who gave his name as Ahmed Hashi said two helicopters attacked at about 2 a.m. at the site where the hostages were being held about 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) north of the Somali town of Adado, the AP reported.

    Outstanding.

This is how it should work every time someone takes an American hostage overseas. A brief, intense visit in the middle of the night followed by the hostages leaving and the hostage takers bleeding out.

Blame it on Sixto - now that is a viable plan.

    Bravo Zulu Seal Team 6!
I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.

A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

I doubt it will be a deterrent. The Somali's are a desperate people and probably place little value on human life. However, maybe this will make them reconsider taking American hostages. Now that the hostages are freed a follow-up plan might include eliminating their ability to get further out to sea than they can paddle in a dugout canoe.

I don't know about that. Somalia is currently one of the most dynamic places on earth. The area (it's not really a state, from what I understand) is literally in a period of anarchy.

Yes, bell bottoms; wore them many years til I graduated to khaki. 20 years worth. Our beloved Seals when you have to send the very best!
