They have been using other agencies for years to fill in the gaps. I have been apart of the Joint Fugitive Task Force for years, performing escort and other duties as part of my agencies participation.

I wish it was as exciting as it is on TV.

Like most jobs, I guess, it depends upon what aspect of it you fall into. But for the many criminal justice/police science folks out there, this could be an opportunity during austere times. For years they only hired through the Co-op student process. But I believe the Congress forced the Administration to stop violating civil service laws by doing so.

    VERY GOOD!!!!!!

One of the worst series of mistakes of the Carter years was elimination of "lists of eligibles" and testing (I think it was called PACE) for ALL Federal positions. Nowadays, as the OP indicated, too much Federal hiring occurs through a sort of old boys network instead of a fully open process in which all may compete equally.

The present non-system for Federal hiring is atrocious, IMO.

HA! I think I'll print that bid and leave it on the table in the break room at work (I work for the Government already). When people come in and see it they will assume somebody wants to bid on it and the rumors will start flying. Oh such fun. I'll keep my mouth shut and play dumb for a while. I love a good CLEAN practical joke.

It is surely true that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Nor can you make them grateful for your efforts.

I can see alot of VETS applying, the downside is it's not as exciting as TV,hours and hours of research and stakeouts,or prisoner escort etc.IOW hours of boredom followed by seconds of sheer terror

At the time I started, there was a well developed point system which gave some well deserved preferences to vets. There were also some active placement programs which helped place vets into Federal jobs. By the end of the Carter years those
programs were in shambles and things fell into a very non-systematic hiring in which jobs were spoken for before they were even advertised. It wasn't all Carter's fault. Reagan also disrupted normal and reasonable hiring methods. He even caused the dismissal of people who were in the midst of transferring from one job to another.

Glad to hear that at least where Chad is, someone is changing the tune a bit for the better.

We need to go back to the MERIT SYSTEM as it existed pre- Carter.
