    Dangers of Chemical Suicide Response

Four officers and two EMT's were exposed to a toxic chemical at a suicide in Boston on Monday. Last week, three Florida paramedics needed medical attention when a suicidal subject threw up malathion in their rescue unit. I posted this for officer safety:

Several years ago i read an account of a first responder being injured when he/she attempted to resucitate a person who had swallowed a capsule of cyanide.

Wow, Sig, rescue breathing would make you the secondary casualty in that incident. If you are gonna take your own life, don't take mine, too!

I'm really happy that I was a LEO when I was, we didn't worry about gloves, needles, ect. It's just not the same out there today.

I hear ya, Hiram25. In the Eighties, we didn't have gloves, Haz-Mat kits, or Sharps containers in the Dodge Diplomats we drove. Come to think of it, we had revolvers in ours holsters, too! Don't get me started.

Well, at least they (powers that be - whomever they are) decided that the respiration is no longer needed during CPR, as the chest compressions seem to do the job.

Now if the heart is still beating, but no breathing going on, that is a different story.

    Sticks, nice dog photo, man!

My latest CPR refresher, done by our FD paramedics last month, said current AHA CPR guidelines call for 30 / 2 compressions to breaths. Before that, we were told not to worry about breathing. It seems to change every few years, although they continue to stress compressions as the lifesaver.
