What does the Austin, Tx PD use?

I am applying to the Austin PD and I will have to buy my own sidearm. But, their website fails to say which pistol I must buy. I'm sure I will find out latter on but I would like to know now. I assume it will be either a Glock 22 or 23. Is there an approved list from which I can choose are is there a standard sidearm I must purchase?

I can't believe a large PD would make you purchase your own for use in the job. Oh well. You won't know unless you ask a LEO working for them or once you get the job. Our department will issue a specific Glock for on-duty carry and in order to carry any other you will have to qualify with it and be approved by the armorer. If you buy the same make and model you can carry it off-duty without qualifying again. (Yes, our department expects you to pretty much carry your service weapon only off-duty unless you qualify on the same courses with a different one.)

Don't worry, though. You'll find out in the academy what firearms are allowed. Even if you transfer with your state cert to a department in the same state you should still go through a quick academy and FTO process. You'll have plenty of time to find it out and buy one.

    Cheers.

Soundwave, I think that in Texas, it is more common for officers to purchase their own weapons. My impression is that officers in Texas usually have larger choice of weapons, so it is not possible for the PD to "stock" all of them. Our PD has at least 5 brands represented in the approved list. This is a department of over 300 troops.
'75 Scout, I had a connection with APD but haven't talked to him in a while. At that time, I know they had Sigs, Glocks, and unknown brand 1911s. I think I saw some H&K P7M8s or M13s, even. Last time I talked to the guy in Austin, there was some sort of administrative move to take 1911s off of the "approved" list, and he was fighting it.
If you don't want to wait for the academy, call their training academy or PIO, but don't be surprised if you get "I'll have to get back with you on that." Not too many officers are interested in shooting, and I might bet that even fewer are interested in that at "Moscow on the Brazos."

I have talked to the recruiting office, but didn't ask this particular question. A secratary answered each time and was quite rude when I was asking questions that were not answered on the website. And I have to buy it before the academy.

If they allow 45s I already have a Sig 220, so I might use it. I'd also like to use a Sig 226 or 229 in 40 cal or 9mm

I just talked to a friend of a friend who is an LEO for the Austin PD. He has become the go-to guy when I have questions and confirmed how hard it is to get some answers from the recruiting office. Apparently the Partol, Training, and Recruiting departments don't communicate. Anyways he said there is a pretty extensive list of approved firearms and the calibers are 9mm, 40, and 45. 357 Sig might be approved but he didn't say. 1911s and other SAOs are what not allowed for liability issues.

So I'll be able to use my Sig 220. I like that because if I really need to end a deadly encounter only armed with a handgun I know the 45 will put the hurt on. Capacity won't matter too much because I can carry extra mags when I get out of the academy. I have 7 months until the academy so in that time I might try to send the 220 back to Sig to get a trigger job, short trigger, and satin nickel the slide.

    75 Scout,
I can't help you with what they currently carry but I own one that an Auston PD officer used to carry. It's a nickel S&W 27-2 with 3 1/2" barrel. It looks like this:
