A somber feeling watching your former home burn on the news
USS Miami sub fire on Today Show: Nuclear submarine fire extinguished at U.S. Navy shipyard in Maine
I am a former sailor of the USS Miami (SSN 755) and yesterday evening I was sickened when I started receiving a steady stream of messages on facebook from fellow shipmates. The fire started yesterday at about 5:30 pm and continued burning through the night. 7 where injured but news reports say the injuries where slight. Former crew members and I where up late last night exchanging links to news articles, talking and consoling one another. Today I am somber and hoping the damage to the ship is slight enough that she can be repaired and continue the legacy of the fighting double nickel, or Satan's Atomic Fun Bus as we not so affectionately called her (at the time.)
I honestly feel like I've just gotten the news that a very dear friend has been critically injured and may not make it.
