Why did the military settle on the 5.56 round?

I have seen discussions about "better" military rounds/rifles. Of course there are economic considerations, but I was wondering, back in the day of the adoption of the M16, why did the military settle in on the 5.56 round vs. all the other ones they could have considered? Does anyone know the history, thinking and/or political winds that ultimately was the determining factor for the selection of this particular round/caliber?

    Great post and article

In my opinion, Robert McNamara pushed it on the military.
