Another social event over and done with

Here we are ending yet another 4 day celebration of a Muslim holiday. Last night a dinner was planned by a local official and once again it took place in our compound for security reasons, besides we have one of the largest sections of grass/lawn in a secured area in the entire province. (Little things mean a lot here)

My crew had our celebration the night before in conjunction with a celebration for my Guard Commander who's wife had just given birth to a son, daughters do not rate dinners. Here activities like this are a sign of political power and wealth. The more people and more importantly the political status of those people that come and the better the food show who has true power in the area.

With that being the prerequisites this was the end all of dinners. At best count we had over 300 show up with political leaders coming from all over the province. Everyone showed up with their own security detail, which is another status of power. So as not to disrespect the host I requested them to leave their long guns in their vehicles or not come in which they did.

I finally did get to scrounge what was left which was rice, flat bread and some part of a sheep/goat which is pretty damn good when you are tired and hungry. Overall it went well with no incidents and the Chi Boy Dancers put on quite a show.

Here are a couple of pics of the attendees, me and dinner on the hoof.

Experiences like these can and usually do make one a better person. Very few will see and feel what you have. God Bless you and stay safe.

Well, at least nobody stormed the place seeking maximum damage. Another step forward.

Looks like it was a good time, for all.

    Stay safe.

JD. Don't know about landing in Florida but a road trip might be in order. Thanks much for the offer.

Oldvet. I was hoping a car did not backfire or any loud noise it would have been interesting for about 200 rounds or so.

As I am sure you know, there is the "Middle Eastern death blossom" which seems common knowledge throughout Iraqi and Afghan forces upon contact.

One thing that I liked about the Afghans, at least the friendly ones, was that for being as absolutely poor as they were, they were very giving. It wasn't uncommon for locals we made relationships with to invite us for meals or chai, and they would always refuse direct re-payment. They were, overall in my experience, very generous people.

I always preferred sheep to goat, goat was always a bit tough. But those fat-bottomed sheep over there always had some excessively fatty parts.
