    This seems crazy!

    From NRA-ILA today

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Apache Junction, Arizona Police Department Destroying Firearms!
    The town of Apache Junction has been in the news over the last few days for the Police Chief's wanton destruction of over 1,200 confiscated firearms.
    The estimated cost of those firearms, if sold legally through a dealer, would have been approximately $150,000, which could have been granted back to the police department for purchase of much-needed equipment.
    Police Chief Glenn Walp, failed to follow procedure that could have resulted in returning stolen firearms to their rightful owners.
    Uhg. I live right up the road from Apache Junction. This town is essentially a mobile home park, a pair of gas stations, and a private storage facility.
    Completely ignoring the fact that they live in mobile homes (best bud Kevin lives in one in Monroeville, NC), they are pretty backwards folk for the most part. It's one of those places that if I pass through I double check that I'm armed.
    Way to go there, Cheif.
    I think I'd move to replace the Chief. ASAP.
    The Vice-Mayor would like people to contact the city officials requesting that they get peoples opinions before establishing policies.
    If you think that's crazy, I wonted to do a raffle for
    our auxiliary unit with a 10/22.
    Chief refused, said the he didn't wont more gun's in
    the community.
    Mind you we are a farming/ranching rural area of FL.
    It is wrong not to return stolen firearms to their rightful owners and failure to do so is a violation of the public trust and is a denial of a person's property without due process of law thus a civil rights violation under color of law, which is a bad, bad thing.
    As for selling other weapons, I don't see how a chief or PD could politically survive doing so, especially if one such weapon were to be traced to a later crime.
    On the other side of the coin every weapon that is destroyed that has no "legal" owner is good for the firearm mfg's. I feel sorry for the weapons that were destroyed that did have a proper home though.
    Granted most of the posters on this site, including me, want just about one (or two) of every flavor of firearm out there so a sale on police seized weapons would be great, but if they are destroyed at least there are new ones rolling off the assembly lines everyday.
    cpmiv: While i don't agree with what the Chief did at all, you do make a point. I had the same take on the issue of our new Wallyworld not selling guns. My idea is, screw Wal-Mart. That just means more business for the local gun shops.
    Ron: If I ever move back to Okeechobee, we can fire the Chief and I'll nominate you to take his place.
    If the chief destroyed property that legally should have been returned to the owners, he is a criminal, plain and simple. Fire and convict, or convict and fire, whichever is quicker. At very least, besides losing $150,000 from the legal sale, the town will now, I hope, be sued by everyone who's gun should have been returned.
    A whole lot of chiefs are nothing more than politicians, and we all know what that means.
    Wish they would sell them to me. 500 bucks right now!
    It would seem to me that the rightful owners have grounds for legal action and compensation.
    Only problem.....all the evidence against him is now GONE.
    He'll get re-elected to, since he towed the anti-gun line, he'll get all sorts of support.
