Well, SOMEBODY has to know what was going on. A simple "We're training here citizens, nothing to see, move along" won't exactly cut it either.
That one doofus... " If it for protecting the kids then I'm all for it"....... Dude, the Army AIN'T there to keep the kids, or for that matter YOU either, safe.

Don't know any specific facts, just speculating here, but I would guess that was Delta training. Hostage rescue type training needs to done in real buildings sometimes. There is only so much that can be done in shoot houses and it would be less of a logistics, security and P.R. issue to train here than in some other country.

When I lived in Fort Benning, GA, the Ranger Battalion used an abandond high school in downtown Columbus to practice urban assaults on an objective. They used military helicopters and fast roped in and shot the place up with sims and left. It wasn't a big deal at the time and I dont remember any issues with the local cops or population.
