Holy crap! He got 7 years for not having a permit? Am I missing something here? Did he point it at the officers?
If we would actually lock up gang bangers and thugs caught with weapons, we might actually have an impact on violent crime.
Im guess him trying to toss the gun and run from the cops played into his sentence.

The difference? Pizza. Chicago know how to pile it on! NY throws it out in the street until it's good and flat, then warms it up.

There was no mention of CHL...it said illegally carrying a firearm...maybe this guy was a felon or had been arrested for illegally carrying a firearm preivously...plus, he evaded arrest...I don't know the laws in NY but that added to the event...we're not getting all the information.

That, Sir, was a "sacrilicious" statement ;)

Interesting note. In Malcom Gladwell's book Tipping Point he featured a chapter on how Rudy Giuliani was able to turn the high crime rates around in NYC by first focusing on the turnstile jumpers. Once it became evident that even the smallest crime wouldn't be tolerated it spread quickly.

How about the stop and frisk and saturation of police in an area. NYPD call it impact policing where they have a very heavy presence. If the gang bangers kniw they will be stopped and frisked just walking around, and go to jail for a long time, they won't carry all the time.
"The answer is the logical corollary of laws that make it hard for citizens to defend themselves—namely, a need for police to take active, relentless, effective measures to disarm criminals.
Such has been the function of the stop-and-frisk activities of the New York Police Department, originally under its famed Street Crimes Unit, which developed an uncanny expertise at identifying those likely to be carrying illegal weapons. The value of stop-and-frisk wasn't just the arrests made and guns seized, but the incentive to New York's criminal population to leave its guns at home.
Liberals criticize stop-and-frisk because those stopped and frisked and sent to jail under New York's draconian gun enforcement are disproportionately black and Hispanic. Never mind that those who commit murders and those who are victims of murders are disproportionately black and Hispanic."
