Exciting times this coming Sunday (24Feb13)

This Sunday I'll be going to California Crossing Natl Guard Armory in Irving to meet with a recruiter for the Texas State Guard to finish up my paperwork. So hopefully within the next month I'll be back in uniform after 20 years since I left the Army.

Not only will I be serving the great state of Texas in times of natural disaster, hopefully I can somehow fulfill the commitment I neglected by taking an entry level separation from the Army. I have regretted leaving since the day after I got home and have tried to re-enlist several times but something always came up (kids and such). I feel I let my battle buddy to my country down and I hope that I can make up for that now. I have tried to support my troops as much as possible from donations to organizations to buying rounds for soldiers at the airport and hope this completes that.

I am very excited and just had to share, if all goes well (no reason why it shouldn't) I'll be able to start gathering my gear next week.

Congrats! I did 4 years in the Air Force and got out about 9 years ago. I've thought about reenlist ing several times too, but just can't stand the thought of being sent somewhere with a three year old at home. Maybe down the road. Thank you for your service!

    Is there an age limit?

Great opportunity to earn another retirement.
    Good luck with the paperwork!

If you get in, and it sounds like it's a done deal...don't come for our guns.

Age limit for enlistment is 17 to 60 and no actual retirement. This is the Texas State Guard, one of the Texas Military Forces behind the Texas National Guard. I have to supply all my gear, uniforms, etc. There are some benefits, like free CHL and tolls waived in certain situations, education reimbursement, etc. We can't be federalized and can only assist neighboring states if Gov. Perry allows it in the event of a natural disaster.

I just get to be back in uniform as a soldier and serve my state.

Congratulations, if I could return to my former position I would do it in a heartbeat. Sadly my age and health prevent it.

Finally got all my paperwork and background check done, I'm officially a soldier again (for the state of Texas). I'm so excited I had my dog tags on before I left the Army Navy Warehouse in Dallas and put on the uniform as soon as I got home, didn't even shave yet (which will be hard to do but worth it).

Well, good for you!!!! I think its cool that Texas has its own State guard!!!!!!!! I'd check it out, but I'm pretty sure that you can take off your expenses on your income tax.
