And the tasty fruits of such spying on citizens domestically will be too sweet for any temporarily-elected or -appointed hireling to avoid ordering such things by the thousands. Can't imagine courts putting up too much of a fuss, once they're pressured accordingly. Trampling folks' privacy and sanctity is "for the children," of course.

Note that they are talking about the camera having enough resolution to tell if someone is carrying a rifle - not peering through your clothes to see if you have a handgun.

On the one hand, we scream that we want our borders secure. Then, when DHS buys drones to keep an eye on the border, we scream about privacy.

Well - shall we have our cake and eat it too?

If they were using helium balloons to do the same thing, would we be concerned? How about helicopters? Both have been used routinely in the past, without anyone getting upset about it.

Excuse me, I need to go get some Reynolds wrap.

High-resolution optics capable of determining if someone is carrying a weapon have been around for quite a while; the now-declassified Projects Keyhole and Hexagon could tell if Ivan was smoking Marlboros or Camels on his back porch (well, not quite...) from 200 miles up - and that was over 40 years ago.

Sorry I missed the part were they're going to secure the borders! I've been waiting since 1980s when they promised to secure the Borders!

I left San Diego, Mexifornia because of this issue! That and my 2nd amendment rights!

I guess I should settle for the smoke up my sphinx!

Does anyone really think the government would behave illegally to the detriment of its citizens! No....wait....that's not what I meant! Does anyone really think the government would unconstitutionally abuse the rights of its citizens? No....that's not quite right either! Does anyone really think....................Aw Gosh Darn It All To Heck! ( Censorship imposed expression of alarm after having answered my own question! )

It makes sense and I'm sure they can justify it. If I were building a surveillance drone, I would want that capacity as well. I would want to be able to tell if criminals, illegal immigrants and that sort were armed. But like most technology, the problem is how it's used and how it may be misused either now or in the future.

Actually, a 10 gauge would be pretty close; 0.775" vs 0.787". Of course, you'd need some real power behind it to get it up where it could be effective!

Yes.... as in all things, there should be prescribed "limitations" and "controls" with checks and balances that people are not violating them and using them in ways that are unintended, violate people's rights or privacy unnecessarily, and are not misused by hyped up folks who have no morals or for ill intent and / or illegal purposes. If you have problems with that, then tough. There should not be carte blanche invasion by the Govt into people's lives, without justification.... and following the laws and intent of those laws.... nor the Constitutional rights of it's citizens.

This kind of military lord-over spillover into private, civilian lives is never popular. Now, I'm all for the eye in the sky if it saves LEO lives, not to mention time and resources, but let's stick to the mission, boys and girls. We're a civilian government.
