It smells too much like punishing the victims.

But then, what is the requirement for a Purple Heart? Does it require a battlefield or war-zone type injury, or is it for anyone wearing a uniform at the time irrespective of circumstance? (I don't know.)

...they were most certainly in a war, on the battlefield...and casualties...of Radical Islamic Terrorism...
...that explains why some refuse to honor their service and their sacrifice...

Killed and injured IN uniform, WHILE serving, by an ENEMY COMBATANT.....PERIOD! He didn't pull this crap because his printer ran out of paper, he did it because he's a radical psycho! These freaking people, do we expect anything less loathing? Maybe they ought to give Hasan an honorable discharge too. Yeah, and then they can send him off to A-stan in order to get a fair trial. We sure wouldn't want to hurt his feelings right? It's a pretty sickening feeling not to be surprised by this. Rant off and I need to find a barf bag.

When the presidents lips moved on this, did we actually think he would honor what he said? Just more of the same crap coming from this administration.

Disgraceful. This "Jihad Johnny" was targeting military personnel. But I suppose the Pentagon brass and Obama wants to avoid explaining why the victims are eligible for an award that involves "enemy combatants" and all that such an award implies about his motives.

Granted he is protected under the Sixth Amendment BUT he is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt he was observed doing the shooting and wounded while actively doing the shooting. There is NO need for a trial just put him down and be done with him. Denying Purple Hearts to the victims is just yet another slap in the face.

Absolutely disgusting. These soldiers were injured or died in service to their country. They were serving on a military base, weren't they? Uh..... Is there something I'm missing here?

Well, I'm going to go against the grain on this one. While I deplore what he did, and I think his punishment should already have been carried out, I don't think it qualifies for the Purple Heart, under the criteria for the award. I have not been proven that his attack was a Al-Qaeda instigated action. That would have to be shown to be the case to qualify.

Eligibility criteria for the Purple Heart Medal is as follows:

    a. The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of an Armed Force or any civilian national of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after 5 April 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded

    (1) In any action against an enemy of the United States.

    (2) In any action with an opposing armed force of a foreign country in which the Armed Forces of the United States are or have been engaged.

    (3) While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

    (4) As a result of an act of any such enemy of opposing armed forces.

    (5) As the result of an act of any hostile foreign force.

    (6) After 28 March 1973, as a result of an international terrorist attack against the United States or a foreign nation friendly to the United States, recognized as such an attack by the Secretary of the Army, or jointly by the Secretaries of the separate armed Services concerned if persons from more than one service are wounded in the attack.

    (7) After 28 March 1973, as a result of military operations while serving outside the territory of the United States as part of a peacekeeping force.

...had the men/women we trust with guns to protect US been trusted to carry guns to protect THEMSELVES...he would have been put down as he began his slaughter...I'm ashamed that our warriors were disarmed because of lily-livered superiors who didn't care about them...
