May 15 - Peace Officers Memorial Day

Anyone aware that today is Peace Officers Memorial Day. Wife and I saw flags at half staff at the Fire Department, and the Library, but unfortunately, not at the U.S. Post Office, or the local Chick-Fil-A.

We should all remember Peace Officers that have given their lives in service to their communities.

    From Wikipedia.

The holiday was created on October 1, 1961, when Congress asked the president to designate May 15 to honor peace officers. John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. Amended in 1994, Bill Clinton, through Public Law 103-322, directed that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff on May 15. According to a proclamation by George W. Bush in 2002,
"Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. These observances also remind us of the ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts of extreme violence and terrorism."

Much of the holiday centers on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C., whose walls feature the names of more than 19,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

This was kept very quiet.. I had no idea that such a day existed, or that it was today.. Whilst I hate the way our government uses the police, I have a lot of respect for the individual officers..

Well I guess thats something. At least there was one post in this thread. I went to Officer Down yesterday to remember and saw the faces of the 60+ we lost just during my time on. 7 of whom I personally knew. They were all good people and far from the Govt. tools some people think we are.

Actually saw our post office with its flag at half staff yesterday, which was refreshing to see. Having been a police officer remembering and honoring my fallen brothers and sisters is of course of great importance to me.

I didn't know yesterday was "Peace Officer's Memorial Day" but I wish I had. A friend and I were driving around and she remarked about many of the flags being at half staff. We were trying to think why that might be because neither of us had heard anything about it on the news.

I have utmost respect for Law Enforcement and am thankful that they are willing to do the job. God Bless those who have lost their lives doing it.
It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

As a member of LE, thanks to all who post positve sentiments. I'm on my way to our local Memorial Service this morning; many cities have them but so often the attendees are 95%+ LEO's. Check with your local PD if you'd like to attend such an event in your area--there have been events all week. Public support means a lot to those who work in this dangerous and underpaid vocation. God Bless our fallen Brothers and Sisters who died for their communities.

Let me rephrase that. 60 from my Dept. alone. The truth is we've lost far more then that in the last 30 years, and far more then that in the time the Flag has flown. All were my brothers and sisters and all are in my thoughts and prayers.
