Steve Stockman plans to introduce bill allowing military personnel to carry on bases

In the wake of the mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard that left 13 dead including the shooter, Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) announced plans to introduce a bill to allow military personnel to pack heat while on military bases.

Stockman told a crowd at the Liberty Political Action Conference on Friday night they were the first to hear about the bill, which he plans to introduce in the coming weeks. The legislation, sponsored by Stockman, will allow military personnel to not only carry, but also fire back in the event that an armed combatant opens fire on a military base.

I want every military man to have a sidearm, and if somebody goes crazy, there will nine people or 10 people shooting back, Stockman said.

The only people on base allowed to carry guns are the military police, and they too must check their firearm in and out of the armory. Any person who arrives with a gun must leave it at the gate.

I would support a bill allowing NCO's and above to carry sidearms to protect the men under their control at all times

It will go nowhere, but good on the Congressman for trying. At least one out of 535 has their heads where they should be instead of up their backsides.....

Concealed carry is currently prohibited on military bases per a directive issued by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 and every gun kept on a military base must be registered with the bases provost marshal. Additionally, if one wants to use a gun whether its for leisurely shooting at an on- or off-base range or for a military exercise it must be checked out of the base armory and returned.
Concealed carry I know has been prohibited on base since 1968 when I joined long before daddy Bush was in office. While I would like to see this pass there is only one way I see it passing.

Makes sense to me, I mean if anyone should be trusted with guns, it's millitary.

Congrats to the efforts of Rep. Stockman...

What a shame, I was on a naval air station in Alaska from 1983-1990 and never had to worry about where my firearms were, when to use them, registering them, trading or selling them, trips to our outdoor range, or going hunting 'on the base'...which was an entire Aleutian Chain island. Those were the days...but long gone now.

I think that if an NCO wants to get qualified they should be able to carry a sidearm while on duty. That would sure make these crazy folks think twice before trying this stuff again.

No need for Congress to become involved. All it takes is an Executive Order from the C-in-C to arm base personnel at some level.

Considering the current C-in-C, DOA, as I said.

It'll be a "novel" concept to the next shooter, too, if sanity prevails here. If only.
