    Old school air power

This is a picture of one of my favorite airplanes. There is absolutely nothing like the rumble of the D model Tomcat at afterburner......ahhhh memories. I love the smell of JP5 in the morning....

Also in the background is NAS Miramar, now MCAS Miramar (NKX). It was my first air traffic control tower and home of the Navy's Top Gun program at that time. As a brand new controller in 1994 I watched a Marine corps F/A18 crash down runway 24R at more than 450kts. As the picture is oriented it crashed and burned from right to left all the way down the long runway and out of the picture to the left. All told it tumbled and burned for about 2.5 miles. The pilot ejected just prior and survived without major injuries. I remember watching from the tower as it it happened and thought "What the heck am I doing here?".

patriot and who isn't. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.

    atctimmy,

Thanks for the post...brings back memories.

We lived in NAS Adak, in Alaska for 7 years. One year, a Top Gun team flew in and our JH/HS students were invited down to the airfield to watch some unbelievable flying. At 1,300 miles out into the Aleutian Islands, these pilots did it all. Standing near the runway and watching a jet fly so fast that you barely only see the exhaust go by...30' above the runway. Then these guys would fly a bit slower across the airfield and then in the middle of the field...head straight up and out of sight. It was amazing. After all the flying the students (about 170 of them) got to meet and speak with the pilots. They were definitely 'confident' fellows.
The last Blood Moon Tetrad for this millennium starts in April 2014 and ends in September 2015...according to NASA.

But for a plane that's just fast, no more no less, they tried real hard to shoot them down.

Have been overflown by quite a few jets out of both Miramar and El Toro, out there. Harriers, a couple F-14's, what looked like a F/A-18 Hornet. Was also in a remote north-south transit corridor, once, when one of the fast-movers had an apparent urgent flight, and he barreled right over the ridge behind me as I was driving. Can't recall seeing the 'burners on, but it was going a heck of a lot faster than ~400mph or so. He was gone (visually) just before the ear-splitting roar hit me on that ridge.

Thanks for the story about the traffic control. Brings back the memories.

Love it. Never seen one in person but when I was a young kid I was enraptured in the F-14. I still love them as a plane. My favorite old plane is the good ole P-51 D Mustang.

Did you fly one of them? Seems like it's just not able to fly with those wings... but I'm just a civy.

Closest I have ever been to one was Game 1 of the 1999 World Series in Atlanta. We were sitting four rows up in left center and the flyby came from behind us......Almost left a soiled spot in the heart of Dixie.....
