    "Dogfights" on the History Channel....

....is one of the best shows on the History Channel.

Thanks to that show and "Battlestar Galactica," I look forward to hunkering behind my TV on Friday nights.

If you don't see "Dogfights," go see it (Fridays @ 10:00 PM):

I enjoyed the one about the 'Red Baron' & the one about the Grumman Hellcats.

Seen most of those and they are very well done.

I don't watch much TV but do enjoy some viewing once I have gone to bed - and they show some dogfight repeats at a late hour which is handy.

''Other prog's I enjoy include ''Engineering an Empire'', Extreme Engineering'', and ''Modern marvels''.

I saw that the other night, Top notch show, I loved the one with the F4 Phantoms.

Another great couple of shows was Beyond 2000, back in the 90's of course, and Wings. A & E's old show "In Search Of" was good too. I was on second shift back then, and had the whole house (and remote)to me self at 2:00 am after getting off work.

One of my favorites. I try not to miss a single episode.

I agree, if not for Discovery, TLC and the History Channel, there really wouldn't be anything worth watching. Sadly, my cable system does not carry the NRA TV channel. Wish they did.

Yesterday's episode was not really a "dogfight" (air-to-air fighting) since it dealt with USN's Taffy 3 (escort carrier/destroyer/DE battle group) vs. the Yamato and other Japanese capital ships.

I used to play a lot of air combat sims on the computer over the internet. That show absolutely fascinates me. I used to read books about air combat and imagined what was happening in my head - and that show just rekindles my addiction.

Needless to say, I have every episode on TiVo.

If anyone wants to read about air combat and is realy interested in the tactics employed, check out a book:
Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering by Robert L. Shaw
The book is not an exciting story. Nor is it a group of stories. It is probably closer to a text book. One of the reviews on Amazon states: "It's not a book you sit down with in front of the fire," which is true. It requires hard thought and concentration. But this book is also known as the "Bible of Air Combat." I have yet to meet a pilot who has not read at least parts of it.

The book also has line-by-line interviews with air combat legends Robin Olds (USAF Triple Ace from World War II to Vietnam), Randy "Duke" Cunningham (first USN Ace of Vietnam), Eric "Bubi" Hartmann (the worlds All-Time Leading Ace), and some others. Enemy encounters are recounted and good qoutes given. Its a great book if you are VERY interested in the subject.

Sorry. That was longer than I expected.

I love the Korean war one where the American chased the Russian down a riverbed and then over a Mig base. That whole episode was simply amazing.

Yup, saw that one....that was an amazing fight in the sky....it's wild that it actually happened and wasn't just a computer-generated fantasy.
