Question Question for any LEO's and prison guards here regarding weight sets in prisons

So, I had a question since you guys have to deal with this on a daily a basis. Should prisoners in prison be allowed to lift weight and use exercise equipment? I've watched shows...and it seems like all the dudes coming out of prison...are like super ripped. Is it harmful to society to allow felons to pump iron? I wanted to see what your viewpoints on this subject are because it seems like allowing criminals to pump iron and come out ripped makes them more dangerous to everyone.

Good question OP, I've wondered the same thing myself. The last thing I would want is to get mugged by The Hulk also. If the prison hoods want to exercise, send them to spinning class or Pilates class.

I'm ok with them being able to work out, it heads off a lot of problems inside the prison. Were I have a problem is feeding them well enough to become "ripped".

A guy in my fraternity in college became a guard at Jackson State Prison until he could land a police job. He was about 6' 4" and had played linebacker on our college team. He was one of the enforcers at our parties, seems like there was always some jerk who found his beer muscles at our events. In my opinion he wasn't a good fighter but he'd always win through brute force. He told me he was scared to death every day he had to go into work. It was had to believe some of the crap that he said went on in there. As I recall, he echoed Sixto's comment about heading off a lot of problems. He definitely didn't feel he was in charge of the prison with his "little stick".

I think they should all be forced to get their GED, because probably 90% of them are dropouts. Then take it farther by making them pass educational tests before they are allowed weight lifting. Maybe, just maybe, it might help 2% believe that there is a better way.

I just woke up......... Never mind.

When used properly weight lifting in prison is a good management tool. I have seen it used both well and poorly. My idea of poorly Inmates in Max Custody often without jobs killing time working out on the weight pile. Good management Inmates who are discipline free or minor discipline only working out during their nonworking hours. If you receive disciplinary write up or medical lay in no weight pile.

Side note for SIXTO when I first went into the biz I/M's in Arizona grew most of their own food and produced enough to supplement the school lunch program. They ate better than I/M's of today. Now days follow the money trail and you often find large scale political donors with contracts to provide food or even food preparation to prisons.

Dude, I saw an episode of cops one time, where it took 4 police officers to restrain a guy who had been out of prison for like 2 weeks. They had to put 2 pairs of handcuffs on him. Weightlifting in prison is such BS...I'm now entirely convinced it should be banned.

I have no idea, but it must be a lot. You do not get big and ripped without a lot of high quality calories.

I have no idea what a typical meal for prisoners is, but when watching "Life" (TV show where cop was imprisoned for 10 years and then became a cop again) he mentioned "Nutraloaf" as a punishment meal. It definitely seems unappealing. Just a semi-related aside.

I have used prisonloaf or nutraloaf as a punishment in Nevada our guideline was the offense had to be diet related. Example if you threw your regular food at the Officer, used your food to make alcoholic beverage (Pruno). Stealing food from the prison did not count as diet related. It tended to be effective.

Weight Lifting followed by Mandatory THUNDERDOME! ~ I am ALL FOR IT!

It would thin out the herd fairly quickly.

In the early 90s I went to work in a large jail. The inmates had full access to weight machines [ no free weights ] Some of them were huge and worked out all day. Some time in the mid 90s that fell out of favor and we took out the weights and put in Isometric exercise equipment. Most of that is used as furniture or a place to hang clothing. And the inmates don't look like monsters! DR
