    "Posers"...or "Imposters"

How many of the Vets on here, have had the misfortune to encounter a "Poser", an "Imposter", a "Wannabe" in regards to claiming Military Service, or Commendations?

I am "actively" involved at the present time in "outing" a "poser" who claims to have been an "ex SEAL"...It has been an interesting process/journey, and is not yet complete, BUT, the person IS aware that he has been "outed", and the process will continue until I am satisfied that he has learned his lesson.

Then, I have one more in my sights, who claims to have been a "Vietnam Veteran"...

For some reason, these folks irritate the absolute dog mess outa me. Sorry, Rant off!!!

There is a site on Facebook called "Stolen Valor", and they have a sister website called Guardian Of Valor | Outing those who Steal Valor from those that earned it.

Makes for some very interesting reading...
Sometimes in life you have to stand your ground. It's a hard lesson to learn and even most adults don't get it, but in the end only I can be responsible for my life. If faced with any type of adversity, only I can overcome it. Waiting for someone else to take responsibility is a long fruitless wait.

I saw a guy at the gas station sporting a Marine Scout Sniper patch on his ratty nylon jacket. I LIKE gun-chat so I struck-up a conversation. He outed HIMSELF so quickly with his nonsensical BS that I actually ASKED HIM, out of respect for true MOS0317 (formerly 8541) specialists, to remove the patch. He sheepishly asked if it was okay if he just took off his jacket and stored it in the trunk of his car? Then he thanked me, I guess for not pounding a mud hole in his head.

Vietnam? Ask if he was in 1, 2, or 3, corp. 1 was north along the DMZ 3 was the very south. Ask him what is "NOOK." That is Vietnamese for water. EVERYONE knows that.

Seal? Ask to fire off his jump commands rapid fire. If he went to jump school, SEAL, Marine Recon, or Green Bennie ALL know those. Ask where they train in San Diego? Coronado. What is the bridge going over to the island made of? Wood.

I once worked with a guy that was regular Navy who CLAIMED to have been at Khe Sahn. He couldn't answer how that ship got 80 miles into the jungle mountains.

I'm not a veteran so I am not as personally vested as others out there might be, but it seems to me that it is their problem not yours.

When it comes to liars and frauds I don't deem it worthy of my time to mess with them unless, of course, it DIRECTLY, affects me or mine.

Hodad, I didn't initiate the conversation with the chucklehead because I didn't believe him. I started the chat because I WANTED it to be true! It was only after he began spouting ballistics (scope dope). Spec Ops, Delta and a host of other video game, Steven Segal, Charlie Sheen horseCRAP that I asked him to peel the patch. Guess I could have offered him a Coin Challenge.

    I'm not a proponent of gratuitous violence/fighting/machismo/etc...

However I see stolen valor as a legitimate reason for an immediate beat-down.

Ive known a couple. Im not military myself but didnt have to be to figure these dudes out. One claimed to have been a Marine sniper. I let him tell tales of his daring do or a while then ask him what caliber round he used. He turned bright red stuttered a second then held out a forefinger and said. "It was about this long"

Hodad , I respect your opinion on that but i think it really does affect all of us and out of respect for the many that died or shed blood it is important to pick up the rocks and expose these creeps .

Also with the way Vietnam Vets were treated when they came home was a disgrace , we must never fall into that level of hate and turn our heads to it.

Yeah I get that. I was just opining about my own personal feelings on the subject.

My dad was a lifer in the Army, a POW (German) and fought in WWII, Korea and was an "advisor" in Vietnam (whatever that means) so I guess I should be a little more sensitive to "posers" than I am.

Actually I wouldn't know how to "out" one if I ran across them. He kept me pretty isolated (lived off base/post) from the military while I was growing up.

    Coin challenge?

There ONCE was a time when our society recognized & encouraged achievement. Bloused trousers meant AIRBORNE. A green beret meant a GREEN BERET. Now, because of our nanny-goat, everybody wins, feel-good culture, EVERYONE gets the once-honored "badge" of an airborne tuck & a beret. It's getting tough to tell the elves from the...fairies.

None that I'm aware of. It's hard to fake being in the missile business to a Missileer. You'd give yourself away the first 30 seconds you opened your mouth.

Yes I agree. Seems like everybody is a scout sniper, recon, ranger, seal, or whatever .

I had a guy tell me he was a part of FAST before. He got uncomfortable when I asked him about his assignments and locations.
Ignorance is a long way from stupid, but left unchecked, can get there real fast.

    Thanks Frist Sgt.

I have been mistaken as a disabled Vet a number of times over the last few years. I have been perfectly honest (to the point of losing a 50% discount on a set of tires) with everyone who has done so. I refuse to disgrace the service of true Veterans by passing myself off as something I have no right to claim.
