In 30+ years never encountered or heard of one in our area. In doing half that time in the crime lab we never had one turned in. Shortened rifles and shotguns were a dime a dozen. Second but w-a-y down the list was homemade suppressors.

One of my friends pulled a traffic stop on a guy who for some reason decided to off himself with his pistol rather than engage him with the select fire AK he had in the car. No clue why but we are not complaining.

In my fifteen years with my department other than John Allen Muhammad and Lee Malvo I would say rifle shootings in my county were maybe one per year. I don't think any of my officers were engaged by subjects with rifles. But it was not unusual for us to have ERT call outs because of barricaded subjects armed with long guns. Most of those guys were talked out.

Body armor on bad guys was rare. I can only remember hearing about guys having it in the house or the car, never wearing it. One thing we did find amusing was some of the home made body armor some of the gang bangers made out of cut up steel belted radial tires.

We ran into full auto AK-47's occasionally, they were the gun of choice for the Mexican Mafia members. A FHP trooper that I knew survived an encounter with a full-auto AK-47 armed with a Beretta 92. Back in the late 80's and early 90's the full auto Mac-10's and Mac-11's were the choice of the Jamaican Posse in the area where I worked (We carried .357 revolvers and 870 shotguns back then.) Fortunately they were very poorly trained in their use and deployment and that' about when we switched to 9mm Glocks.s when.

I have never encountered a full auto weapon on the street or a ballistic vest.

Few rifles, a lot of cheap handguns and such.

Wearing armor while committing a crime is a crime itself and punishable by law. That will stop the BGs from wearing it.

My experience is the same as the LT's basically. I did run into one that had the old "Hell Fire" adapter on it (the one that was suppose to turn a semi-auto into a 3 round burst) during a traffic stop that went South. Other than that, it's like the LT said, certain gangs favor certain guns or have a quote "signature piece" they carry. Encounters with these types of hardware generally indicate a probable organized crime/cartel/gang involvement.

We had a couple of guys that were running guns illegally, and when they were taken down there were a couple dozen full autos in their possession, mostly Mac10s and similar. Looks like they had made over 100 that did make it out on the streets. Where they all ended up I don't know. This was back in the days of the Cocaine Cowboys era, so most probably went to Florida, although one did turn up on a Hell's Angel in CA.

Not a LEO but had a friend who was/is a 2nd generation (or maybe 3rd gen) big city officer and was told that their father once came across a full auto ak, fortunately at the time it was laying next to a dead gangbanger when they responded to a shots fired call. They also said they were personally involved with one, where EMS called after arriving on a scene of an OD where they found a bunch of drugs (heroine) and a Mac-10.

Its possible to encounter full auto anywhere. From my observations the odds increase closer to our southern border.

Here in South Texas we had fake cops doing home invasions on drug stash houses that were wear4ing body armor, but o select fire guns....then there was the corrupt PANAMA UNIT COPS drug task force that were escorting drug shipments and ripping off drug loads and selling them.I expect to hear about them ending up dead in Prison before too long...you don't rip off Cartels and live

    Thanks all!

I kind of firure a bit more in border towns or 80s era seems to be the two places in time and place that have a lot more full auto action

It does make more sense to me to run into more sawed offs as they are easier to make me thinks then full auto for most guns ...

In my 25 years on patrol and investigations, I've seen only one fully auto mac10. It was taaken from some random guy who wasnt able to properly hide it. Someone saw it and called it in. I have been up against a few rifles. First gun collar I ever made was a jealous husband armed with two handguns, and a rifle. I would have shot him except for my training Officer Hank did some real police work. I've many sawed off rifles and a whole lot of sawed off shotguns. far as body armor... In the streets it's very expensive. I have run into people wearing a vest... some criminals, some regular folks.
