The MD thread about those who assaulted that police officer got me thinking:

When is it ok to help a LEO, and how?

And (assuming assaulting a LEO is a felony) when is it ok to draw to save the LEO's life?

Asking the officer if he needs help is where you start. If he or she says yes, then do so. The situation will dictate how, and whether or not you will need to draw. If they are knocked out, and cannot respond, If AOJ is present, then drawing and firing would be acceptable

As Harryball said, asking is the FIRST move.

That being said be VERY VERY aware that the act of doing so has clarified your choice of sides and could very well identify you as a new target if the assailant takes offense to the odds of his success changing.

Be ready to not only assist the officer but possibly fend off an attack on yourself.

You have to be very very careful.

Ask, then act...or not.

If subject is unconscious then implied consent is used and you do what you can.

Understand that another responding officer is NOT going to know that you are the good guy and likely you standing over an officer with a gun is a very tricky situation.
