This happens about once a year. We're more aware of it now than in the past. We use to train Iranians and still train Iraqis, Jordanians, and Saudis. Every so often they decide they don't want to stay at the training sites. The last ones I remember were from last year and they caught them trying to sneak into Canada. Some try to go home, but most want to stay in the US.
Careful guys, Lynch is everywhere she's everywhere and she said she would punish anyone that discriminated against a Muslim.:twak:
In the early 1970's at Ft. Bliss Tx. I taught military personnel from Kuwait, Jordan and Saudi the IHAWK missile system and at least one student per training cycle went AWOL. Seldom caught them, most went to Mexico.
This is a very common occurrence. I supported NATO Training Mission - Afghanistan (NTM-A) where they sent Afghan Army/Police folks all over the place for training, mostly in the EU. That was how I lost one of my best interpreters as he went along to support such an effort. If I recall they went to Germany or Bulgaria....never to return. Rarely is it anything nefarious, they just seize the opportunity to get out of a bad country and try to make a better life. Not saying it's right, just understandable.
My wife works with a lot of foreigners, mostly from India. Its not uncommon for them to suddenly not show up for work then find out the person went back to India. Usually its to get married or their mom is sick. They don't have a concept of telling their employer they're leaving for a couple months.
I would have done the same thing. I've been to Afghanistan. I'd rather be homeless in the USA than a military officer in Afghanistan.
