Nothing new ..The I R A was doing this for years during the troubles ... But they used bigger tanks and truck mounted it .. It was luck with aiming but if it hit ....
Just shoot at a large city any hit any where going to see people in panic . In America will be screaming for the government to do something . Like control selling of propane tanks of all sizes. And of course ban guns. .
When I was young, I learned about steel pipe and, er, components, out at a gravel pit. Crafted some amazing rock launchers, tennis ball launchers, etc. Of course, who knows how close it was to "pipe bomb" grade stuff. Didn't seem too bad. And it was all done out at the old defunct quarry, so the worst that could have happened is we'd have gotten injured and set fire to the scrub at the base of the quarry. That was decades ago. Funny, what one does as a kid. (Or, did, back then, when "childhood" meant something completely different than it does today in much of the country.)
* And, for those wondering, no I don't have a "launcher" trailer or any current materials or plans to tow "shells" with bacon grease tipped projectiles all around the country. :embarassed:
Hmm, wonder if I should have filled my tanks last week. I have two. Now planning to fill them Monday. If you don't hear from me by nightfall, I'm probably answering questions somewhere.
Had a bunch of propane tanks stolen in the Kansas City MO area not to long ago, and a bunch of large cell phone purchases at area wal-marts in what I now hear was five rural MO towns. One of them was my in my County Seat. Suspicious middle easterners were reported inquiring about Bagnel Dam at Lake of the Ozarks, and renting a boat. I am afraid it is about to get very real very soon.
But some middle eastern guys towing one of those cannons around in the USA might find it kinda difficult to set up and use it w/o some pretty stiff interference. :wink:
Years ago I witnessed propane tanks exploding on the roof of an apartment house while the roof was being repaired. Flames obviously backed up down the lines into the tanks and let me tell ya....I was about a mile away.....and....It Was No Joke.
I think launching a 100 lb tank would give problems. Years ago, my wife and I were at a tailgate before a Bama game at our home stadium. Turkey frying was just becoming a fad and two guys figured that that was the perfect place for learners. The first thing I noticed, from the yelling, was fire running up from the burner towards the tank. My wife asked if we should run and I just said that there was no use - we were too close and there was no cover. Fortunately, even before the fire department arrived, someone with blankets thought quickly enough to smother the fire (probably at the expense of the blankets). There's a lot of firepower packed into a propane tank...
They better beef up security on the Blue Rhino cages ; ) PS have anyone seen what a acetylene tank will do when you bust the vaulve of wit a sleadge hammer,,It goes down the road Quick SWEET :image035:

I don't think they're using Propane as the explosive here, they're just using the tanks as a semi-aerodynamic bomb casing, and they got the tank packed with semtex or something. Look at all the crap they have welded to the tank - there are 1 or 2 impact fuses welded onto the front of it, and stabilizers and guides welded onto the sides. You can't do that kind of welding on a full propane tank without setting it off, and you're not going to take a contraption like that to a propane store to have it filled without raising just a little suspicion.

Presuming welding is the only way to attach things to the outside of a tank. Not being a rocket, with rocket-like forces, I imagine there's a decent epoxy-type adhesive commercially available that'll do for metal-to-metal attachments. (Just look at what the whole of the automotive industry does, these days. No "frying" of the metals needed, if using the right glue.)
If indeed intended for use as a mortar type weapon not just common theft;
A) They are very inaccurate
B) To be deadly they need military grade explosive as a filler
C) Likely used in a city, high probability of fast detection.This isn't Syria.
IMHO if it were obtained to use as a weapon, it would be more effective used to increase explosive effect of other IED like a vehicle bomb. Again without military grade explosives its use is more propaganda than anything else. There has been a theorized connection in news with cartels on our southern border. Which might suggest those types of explosives were obtainable. Who knows, how do ya fight terrorists? Kill them and don't be scared due to their mostly ineffective acts. I'd be more wary if lots of fuel trucks were missing. Our media is helping terrorism by blowing small acts way out of proportion imo.
How long will it be for background checks to purchase a propane tank or just refill it?
