FBI agent possibly killed by colleague

It looks like the FBI agent who was killed Thursday may have been shot by another member of his team.

"Preliminarily, information suggests the agent may have been fatally wounded as a result of the accidental discharge of another agent's weapon during a dynamic arrest situation," the FBI said in a statement Thursday night.

Pedro Ruiz, an agent in charge of the Newark office, said the suspects did not fire their weapons, which included two assault rifles and a handgun.

Definitely not a good situation. It also demonstrates that gun safety is important even in the middle of the gunfight.

It's always sad, and it does happen, both in LE and military operations.

Well, I work in PRNJ about 15 miles away from the incident. I saw it on the the internet before I left work that day. Route 22 was locked down. On route 78, the exits were closed and helicopters were flying.

My thoughts and well wishes go out to the surviving family members of the slain officer.

    Sad all around.

I was hopeing that it wasn't friendly fire. It's a sad situation but it happens. Not only does it end one life but it ruins another one.

From what I see on TV cops I am surprised it doesn't happen more often. Training-training-training

Story keeps changing. Now the agent was mistaken as one of the perps . and again , WHY were shots fired when the perps NEVER fired a shot .

i also take offense at the "assault rifle" comment . Bad enough they throw out "assault weapon" every time something looks "scary" , but the term they used means they were select fire/auto/burst weapons . As far as I know, they did not make any SKS in anything but semi .

I think there was someone that was just a little to "trigger happy" and it ended up costing an agent his life .

Just goes to show that even professionals get nervous and screw the squirrel on occasion, and when it happens and involves things that go boom the result is very frightning. It happens with LE, Military and others i am sure. Its the price of freedom perhaps, but it also says that something was missed there and needs to be refreshed so it doesn't happen again soon.

If someone points a gun at you, do you plan to wait until they shoot at you to fire at them? Why? Police Officers don't have to wait until they get shot at to engage a suspect. You, as a private citizen, don't have to either. If somebody kicks in the front door of your house at 0200 and come running in with a gun in their hand, do you plan to hold your fire until they shoot at you, or would you go ahead and engage?

PS - I should point out that I don't know if the "perps" in this case came out pointing weapons or not. My point is simply that to apply a "bad guys must shoot first" rule to law enforcement is no more reasonable than applying the same rule to armed citizens.
