WINDBER, Pa. -- A Somerset County man is facing felony charges after he was accused of setting a gas pump on fire and taking a woman hostage Monday.
The incident began around 6:30 p.m. at the Sheetz on Graham Avenue in Windber.
Police said Richard Hoffman was filling a gas can when he lit the can and the pump on fire. Officials said Hoffman then ran to his apartment on 13th Street and took his girlfriend, Karen Stigers, hostage.
According to police, Hoffman said he had an AK-47 assault rifle and told authorities to leave or they would be shot.
After police negotiated with Hoffman, he released Stigers, officials said. Hoffman surrendered around 1 a.m. after police threw tear gas through a window.
Stigers was not injured and no weapon was found, police said.
Hoffman remained in the Somerset County Prison on Tuesday and, according to a criminal complaint, is facing several felony charges including kidnapping and arson.

In Windber, PA? Just goes to show that the BGs strike anywhere, anytime and being prepared is always a must, even when stopping at the local gas station for gas or a gallon of milk. I am glad this situation was resolved without any casualties.
