HAMPTON -- All of the hostages involved in a police standoff at a a McDonald's restaurant are free and uninjured, but Hampton police continue a a tense standoff with an unidentified gunman.

Police say they received a call about 1:54 p.m. from a person who said they were armed and inside the restaurant, which is at the intersection of Pembroke Avenue and Grimes Road.

The caller did not make any demands, but early reports were that a number of people inside the restaurant at the time the standoff began were held inside a freezer - including an employee who is eight months pregant.

Police set up a command post a short distance away from the restaurant, with ambulances and fire trucks parked nearby.

All of the hostages were released about 4:40 p.m., after members of the SWAT team went inside the restaurant. There were no reports of shots fired.

A spokeswoman for Hampton City Schools says nearby Phoebus High School went into lockdown at 2:05 after being told about the standoff by city police.

She says the district also put Jones and Spratley middle schools and Merrimack, Cary and Smith elementary schools in modified lockdown to protect students.

When Phoebus dismissed school at 2:35, all students who walked to school were taken to the gymnasium and were not allowed to leave until they could be safely escorted off campus or were picked up by parents.

Students who drove to school left through the faculty parking lot. Hampton Roads Transit buses, which provide school transportation, were rerouted so they did not drive by the restaurant. All afterschool activities were canceled for the day.

Christina Meyer of Hampton said she lives next door to the restaurant and went in about 1:30 p.m. to put in a job application, but was told none were available. Asked after the standoff started whether she still wanted to work at the restaurant, Meyer said no.

Staff writers Shawn Day and Jim Hodges, and staff photographer Sangjib Min are on the scene. Look to dailypress.com for updates on this breaking news story.

Or more than two containers of the addictive 'Spicy Buffalo' dip sauce that goes with the chicken strips.
That stuff is like crack. I've got one sitting on my desk right now next to my laptop.

Wow, and I used to live right down the street from there. I'd heard about this on TV, but had yet to hear the whole story. Thanks for posting and filling me in!

It seems the area does merit my feeling of "glad I have a gun while I'm here..." I worked in Portsmouth last year and passed through the general vicinity on a regular basis.

HAMPTON, Va. — A SWAT team freed 12 employees and two customers believed to be held hostage Monday inside a McDonald's by an armed man for nearly three hours, but they never found a gunman, police said.

No one was injured, and police were trying to figure out whether the man somehow got away or if someone had perpetrated a hoax.

"Anything's possible," Hampton police spokeswoman Cpl. Allison Good said. "That's why they're still working it, to prove this actually occurred or that maybe it's a joke. It's one of those things that we can't take lightly."

A man called police at about 2 p.m. from the restaurant to say he was armed but made no demands, Good said. She said he made a few other comments but she declined to elaborate.

Officers arrived at the McDonald's as a few customers were leaving, and they saw a man they thought was the caller but were unable to confirm that he was armed, she said. The customers police saw leaving the restaurant were not hostages and may not even have been aware of the situation, she said.

A SWAT team surrounded the building and police hostage negotiators tried, but failed, to contact the man, Good said.

Police also set up a command post near the restaurant, blocked traffic within a half-mile radius and asked people in nearby buildings to remain indoors.

At about 4:40 p.m, SWAT team members went into the McDonald's and freed 14 people, Good said. Police were interviewing the people, she said. She had no details from those interviews.

Police continued to try to contact the man. At about 5:30 p.m., the SWAT team went back into the restaurant to search it but found no one, Good said.
This update makes the situation sound rather odd. Hopefully they will figure out what the heck happened.

So, my wife and I were talking about this after diner tonight, and I though I would ask you guys the same thing she asked me. What would you have done had you been carrying in the McDonalds when all this went off?

My response would have been with a serious face; 'What ever necessary to survive and be home for dinner on time'.
