This 1988 photo provided by Dale Snodgrass shows Snodgrass as a Navy Capt. performing a 'flyby'' next to the USS America. The F-14 flyover was shot by a crewman aboard the USS America, during a Dependent's Day cruise in 1998, during which families of the crew members are brought on the ship for a day at sea. At the time Snodgrass was Executive Officer of the VF-33 fighter squadron (The Starfighters) out of Oceana Naval Base in Virginia deployed aboard the USS America. (AP Photo/Courtesy Dale Snodgrass)
"[T]he people are not to be disarmed of their weapons.
They are left in full possession of them."
Zacharia Johnson (speech in the Virginia Ratifying Convention,25 June 1778)"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed." ~Alexander Hamilton
I was at a dropzone in Florida one time (won't say where or who) and we got a flyby at the end of a boogie where the Caravan went by so low, with the left wing dipped, that if a tall person had been standing in the way he could've had his head clipped. Right diagonally across the ramp where all the skydivers had come out to watch. It was pretty psycho! Definitely a crowdpleaser. We also got a flyby from the Skyvan, but not so low.
The Navy guy wasn't that low, the flight deck is 60 ft from the water and he was above that.
We did an arrival air show at Wake Island and the C-130 guy hit a 4 ft post, no crash but he was low, hey.
We went by the deck of one of the hospital ships to say hello to one of ours that had gotten shot down and we were looking up at him on deck looking down at us with a Navy Nurse on each arm.
I've seen this on another website. The pilot had his wings suspended for doing such a dangerous maneuver. I am a 20 yr USN Vet and while I love the picture, this pilot really put alot of people on the carrier at risk. Even Blue Angels make a mistake and crash, unfortunately. I served on aircraft carriers and this is just "Top Gun" at it's worst. COOL Picture, though!
I lived next door to Dale Snodgrass's sister when I was a kid. His parents lived on Lake Ronkonkoma near my house and when I was little I would fish off their dock as well as watch the July 4th fireworks from there. As I grew older I went to school for Aerospace Engineering and met with his dad to talk about the industry some at their house. Although I never got to meet Dale his parents and sister were good people. We fell out of touch years ago and I would assume his parents have passed on.
As far as I know his wings were never pulled for the photo in question.
