I know the USAF put one on two 747s a couple years back. It sticks out the nose of the plane and goes all the way to the back (inside of course). It was designed to intercept vehicle born WMDs. Last I heard there was one each on the east and west coasts of the US, and that was about two years ago. It was all over the popular science journals. Nifty, 'eh?
Half measures availed us nothing...
very cool news. I don't know how old this vid is, but I'm assuming it will be something similar to this.

The ABL (Airborne Laser) program, though not dead, has been cut back. It was not added to a 747 but rather it was a custom designed 747 by Boeing. It was intended to intercept enemy missiles during boost phase, prior to RV and decoy deployment. It uses a megawatt iodine laser designed to either destroy or deflect he enemy missile.
Having them on the coasts of the US would be completely useless. They must already be in the air when an enemy missile launches. In fact, boost phase programs (ABL, KEI) have a huge problem in that there is only a short time (just a few minutes at most) before separation. We would need to have launch detect, verify it is an enemy missile, and determine where it was headed before giving the order todestroy it.
EKV and SM3 are far better and more useful missile defense programs.
