Officer shot in chest later admits shooting himself

SAN ANTONIO A massive overnight search for suspects in the shooting of a San Antonio-area school police officer ended abruptly when the officer finally admitted that he shot himself.

The episode began just before midnight last night when San Antonio police received a call from Northside school district police Officer Patrick Ritchey. The white officer said he was attacked by two Hispanic men who grabbed his service handgun and shot him twice in the chest. Only his bullet-resistant vest kept him from serious injury.

An intensive air and ground, door-to-door search failed to turn up any suspects. San Antonio police detectives say that after two hours, Ritchey admitted that he shot himself.

San Antonio police are considering charges, and Northside school district officials are considering disciplinary action.

Why? I can think of less painful ways to get attention.

Has is been made clear if he INTENDED to shoot?

Not necessarily obvious. If he had a semi-auto and lost control of it, he could easily fire multiple shots while trying to regain control.

Either way, he really screwed the pooch by making up the story.

Well, I guess we can see why he isn't working for NASA. Definitely no rocket scientist there!

Thumbs down Thumbs Down On Him.

Well, I would feel something for the guy if he owned up to it right away. Instead he put his whole department and likely other departments out searching for two two people that didn't exist.
Sure, blame it on the Hispanics.

Had a case like this a few years ago. City LEO shot up his body armor (on the roadway) and claimed a BG did it while he was wearing it. Seems he was looking for a psych disability. Had everybody looking for a shooter, briefly, until his story fell apart. Don't recall the exact outcome, but he's no longer a LEO and never will be again.

Wow...someone looking for attention for sure. Obviously needs psychological help...and shouldn't a part of any school system nor police force.

If he was trying to kill himself...why the armor? If it was an ND, how'd he doubletap it? Man that's got to be a dooosie. I think I would have at least felt pitty for him if it was an ND and he owned up to it, but to send the rest of his brethren out combing high and low for active shooters? Ugh.

With a semi-auto he could ND twice depending on how he was holding the firearm.

Maybe he got inspired from reading about one of our local deps.

A McCracken County grand jury has been hearing testimony in the case all afternoon. We're now told it's handed up an indictment.
The grand jury heard evidence of possible criminal wrongdoing today against former sheriff's deputy Benny Harding.

Harding was patrolling in a remote area in October when he says a driver he pulled over wounded him with a shotgun.

Harding said he would have been killed if he hadn't knocked the gun away.

On Wednesday night evidence was mounting that Harding made the whole thing up.

That's who I initially thought this thread was about. Turned out that ol' Benny had a career-long history of injuring himself/faking injuries and drawing worker's comp.

Yeah Manzanita, I thought the thread was about Harding as well. It's bad enough when a guy repeatedly (successfully) defrauds insurance companies by faking Worker's Comp claims. It's even worse when he's an LEO. And what really inspires my confidence is that this repeated Con Artist skated right through the background check to be hired by the Sheriff's Department. It brings into question the integrity of EVERYBODY in the Sheriff's Office.
