(Memphis 12/29/07)-A robber attempting to hold up an adult bookstore in Memphis was stopped in his tracks Saturday by a customer who turned out to be an off duty Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy.

It all happened at the Fantasy Warehouse Adult Entertainment Center at the corner of Summer Avenue and White Station Road.

The robbery suspect was critically wounded after exchanging gunfire with the deputy inside the store.
Memphis police say there were at least three customers inside Fantasy Warehouse when a man entered the store, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money.

They say that's when an off duty sheriff's deputy who was also shopping inside the adult business identified himself as an officer and told the suspect to drop his weapon.. Instead, he began shooting at the deputy and the deputy fired back .

"The sheriff's deputy according to our witnesses did give the suspect a chance to drop the weapon. He refused and began opening fire that's when the off deputy returned fire striking the suspect," said Major Bill Walsh.

The deputy involved in the shooting, Gary Gadd is a nearly twenty year veteran of the Shelby County Sheriff's Department and a member of the fugitive squad.

The sheriff's office say Gadd did not violate any department policies by being in the adult business and was carrying a personal weapon and not his service revolver.

"The deputy has been relieved of duty with pay. This a normal situation when things like this come along we ask them to stay at home during the course of the investigation there are obviously a lot of unanswered questions," said Steve Shular with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

Police spent hours going over the scene and a car outside the business believed to be the suspect's vehicle. Police won't say how many shots the deputy fired at the suspect, but say no one was injured except the suspect.

Officers say the suspect was transported the hospital with extremely critical injuries.

Although the shooting involved a Shelby County Sheriff's deputy the Memphis Police Department is handling the investigation.

Fantasy Warehouse (read: whorehouse) is a well known hook up spot for men of "that" persuasion. It is also next door to a topless joint. Odd thing to me is that the deputy just happened to be there at the right time.

Damn sucks for the cop to get caught like that, but good for him scoring a win.
Maybe someone could make a porno movie based on the events and call it 'Pop Shot'. :p

Sounds, based on the news article, that it was a good shoot. Despite doing the right thing, this officer is going to get bashed for being in an adult book store. A legal activity if I'm not mistaken. If he were in a 7-11 buying a slurpee, chili dog and the Jan '08 copy of Big'uns there would be no issue. The officer's personal choice on porn doesn't change the fact that it sounds like he stepped up to the plate and won the righteous fight. The fact that he may or may not have been exercising his kink :danceban: doesn't change that. Just my .02.

Hey, that doesn't happen every day ("at least not in Bedford Falls").

A night to remember....go out to get your freak on and get into a freaking gunfight instead.

I have been laughing about this entire story since I read it! You would have to know more about the reporter, Ms MOON, and about Steve Shular, the SCSO PR guy to get the full laugh. Just take my word for it, this is some funny stuff.

SIXTO said, "sucks to be him (the officer)." So many ways to respond to that comment and all of them would probably get anyone that did permanently banned/exiled from the forum.

RandyTulsa2--it was at 10:00 am, not at night.

semperfi.45--"Who really shops in an adult entertainment center?" Too funny!

All joking aside, I am glad the good officer was there at the right time AND that he was carrying a weapon AND he had the good judgment to use his knowledge and skills to handle what could have been a really bad situation for the store clerk and other patrons.

Does it really matter if the Deputy used his own weapon or a department "service revolver"? Does the press believe LEOs have super magical bullets that only hit BGs and by the Deputy using a regular, ole' weapon that anyone can buy, his superior marksmanship skills made the bullets land where he aimed?

...because we all know those "regular guns" jump out of holsters and safes and shoot at schools, kids, nuns, and puppy dogs...
