SANFORD - A woman suspected of abducting a 1-day-old baby from Central Florida Regional Hospital is being booked into Seminole County jail this evening on one count of kidnapping, police said.
Jennifer Latham, 39, was arrested after the baby was found by a Lake Mary police sergeant. The infant was inside a Chevrolet Blazer that was stopped while traveling westbound on Interstate 4 near State Road 434.
He was in good health, police said.
Sanford police put out an alert to other law enforcement agencies a few hours ago after a hospital alarm went off warning security of a possible abduction.
Police said the abductor changed into scrubs inside the hospital, making her resemble a hospital worker. She attempted to take a baby from the nursery but was confronted by parents and stopped.
She then took another child, setting off an alarm, but she was able to leave the building without being caught. The hospital was on lockdown for a time, but that was lifted mid-afternoon after police concluded the suspect had most likely already left the building.
Police were able to get a partial license tag and a description of the vehicle, and from that they obtained a driver's license photo of the owner. They compared that to the abductor, who had been photographed on a hospital security camera, and saw it was the same person.
Police quickly broadcast a description of the woman and the car. Before they could issue an Amber Alert, Lake Mary Sgt. Joe Gowen noticed a Blazer matching the description traveling westbound Interstate 4 near the State Road 434 exit.
