One day old baby, kidnapped from Florida hospital, recovered safe and sound

SANFORD - A woman suspected of abducting a 1-day-old baby from Central Florida Regional Hospital is being booked into Seminole County jail this evening on one count of kidnapping, police said.

Jennifer Latham, 39, was arrested after the baby was found by a Lake Mary police sergeant. The infant was inside a Chevrolet Blazer that was stopped while traveling westbound on Interstate 4 near State Road 434.

He was in good health, police said.

Sanford police put out an alert to other law enforcement agencies a few hours ago after a hospital alarm went off warning security of a possible abduction.

Police said the abductor changed into scrubs inside the hospital, making her resemble a hospital worker. She attempted to take a baby from the nursery but was confronted by parents and stopped.

She then took another child, setting off an alarm, but she was able to leave the building without being caught. The hospital was on lockdown for a time, but that was lifted mid-afternoon after police concluded the suspect had most likely already left the building.

Police were able to get a partial license tag and a description of the vehicle, and from that they obtained a driver's license photo of the owner. They compared that to the abductor, who had been photographed on a hospital security camera, and saw it was the same person.

Police quickly broadcast a description of the woman and the car. Before they could issue an Amber Alert, Lake Mary Sgt. Joe Gowen noticed a Blazer matching the description traveling westbound Interstate 4 near the State Road 434 exit.

Outstanding work there by an alert patrol officer.

Great work all around. Being able to get her driver's license photo from a partial plate number and matching it to the security camera. Great work.

Good job by the LEO. Glad they got the baby back unharmed. A crime like that should be punishable by death. Too bad she did not resist with a fake gun.

    This is just amazing:

Seminole County Judge Ralph Eriksson ordered 39-year-old Jennifer Latham released from custody, but she has to wear a device on her ankle so authorities can keep track of her movements.

Latham was arrested Friday and charged with kidnapping a newborn child from Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford. An alarm went off and a Lake Mary police officer pulled Latham over on Interstate 4 a little more than an hour later. The baby boy was in the car and was unharmed.

In making his determination Judge Eriksson recognnized that Latham had no prior offenses

The hearing was held Saturday morning at the Seminole County Jail. Latham, who kept her face covered with her long hair during the proceedings, said she didn't have a lawyer and will get a public defender. She did not have to pay a bond and will be set free under a pre-trial release program. She still has to get an ankle monitor before she can be released.

This is a major felony committed against a helpless child.

What on earth could this judge be thinking?

A good friend was there yesterday while his wife was upstairs in maternity. He said the place was like a zoo and one of the TV stations offered the family (of the kidnapped baby) $1M for an exclusive. After the incident, security was tightened and everyone was required to present photo ID, etc. Isn't that kind of like deciding to put fire sprinklers in your office after the place burned to the ground?

The hospital is between the west side of Sanford, FL (a very upscale "hood") and the interstate (around a mile or so). With all of the crime stats for the area, you'd think security would have been better before the fact. I lived in Seminole County for the 12 year period prior to my move west. I sure don't miss the nightly body count on the news.

Well, the good news is that the accused kidnapped will not be released on home detention after all.

Seems - and prepare yourselves for a shock here - that this accused felon was less than honest with the police about her actual identity and her extensive criminal record.

Long story short, she has 10 prior felony charges.

Add one, for providing false information to the police. She never left the detention center, and she is being re-arraigned tomorrow. The State's Attorney is seeking no bond status for both the kidnapping and the false info charges.
