U.S. Army 1970-1974. Flew Cobra Attack Helicopters the whole time after I graduated from flight school in late ‘71. I was only 19 when I graduated. Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW-2) at discharge.
Republic of Vietnam: Late Feb. 1972 to Early Feb. 1973, F/79th ARA (Blue Max), 1st Air Cav. and H/17th Cav. for the 1st Aviation Brigade. It was a great time to be 19 Y.O. and to be bulletproof (at least I thought I was).
After Vietnam, Ft. Riley, Ks: Cobra Platoon of the 335th Assault Helicopter Co. in the “Big Red One” (1st Infantry Div.) ’73 & ’74 until discharge. It was very historic at Ft. Riley, when Custer rode out to the Little Big Horn he said “Don’t change anything until I get back”. They didn’t, and that’s what did me in with the Army. No kidding, they were still using Custer’s old house as base housing, although it was a 2nd Lt.’s house by then.
Biggest thrill was drilling NVA T-54 tanks with my trusty six-barreled 20mm Vulcan Cannon slung under the wing of my Cobra. No laser range finders or fancy aiming devices, just good old fashioned Kentucky windage at 2,000m. The Vulcan with AP would eat them alive.
Fear is a reaction.......
Courage is a decision.
