SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!
Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!
Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays.& nbsp; Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million.

Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand. He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.
Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.

Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO, HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY: Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona) who created the 'Tent City Jail': He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights; Cut off all but 'G' movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get Sued For Discrimination.
He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order
that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again, But Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel. When asked why the weather channel, He Replied, 'So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working ON My Chain Gangs.'

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton.....If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'
He bought Newt Gingrich's lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.
When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.
More On The Arizona Sheriff: With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports: About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their government-Issued Pink Boxer Shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 Degrees Inside The Week Before. Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.

'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic.

He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are e Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear, But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes, So Shut Your Damned Mouths!'

Way To Go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders.

Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Almost couldn't believe this but Snopes confirms: Urban Legends Reference Pages: Sheriff Joe Arpaio

FYI he didn't actually take over control of the entire animal shelter system in Maricopa County, but he did institute the program that you mentioned. So 98% true anyway.

I like "Git-R-Done" politics.

Peace,
Pete Zaria.

His programs should be implemented nationwide!

We need more LEO like him! Of course then we need to get rid of the bleeding hearts that think jail is a place to read, lift weights, watch TV. If prisons were used as punishment again instead of a home off the streets, maybe a few more criminals would decide to stay away.

ALL members of the ACLU belong in his jail!:yup:

Sheriff 'Joe' for prez...

Indeed, it isn't the Ritz. Don't like it? Don't come back. So long as the treatment isn't inhumane (and working to defray one's cost and burden to society ain't that), then it sounds far, far preferable to the four-star treatment doled out most everywhere else.

Frankly I have never understood the acclaim this man receives. I've watched him on TV many times, followed news stories about him for many years. If a small fraction of the stunts he has been reported to have pulled are true, I think he is unsuited for the position.

It might sound "cute" and just to put prisoners in tents, cloth them in girl's underwear, and feed them the worst sort of food that can be bought for a few cents per person per day, but it isn't sensible.

The guy gets elected and elected and reelected by appealing to the most base instinct in the electorate to punish wrongdoers without mercy or restraint.

Whatever good might come of that, it is going to be offset by a hardening of those who have been harshly treated.

And then, there is the entire issue of where cruel and unusual punishment starts and ends.

He does not buy them any food. They eat what they grow. They have gardens they get their veggies from and a hog farm to supply the bologna. I think it is great. That is irrelevant though. They are criminals. If they don't like, they should not break the law(in his county anyways).

#16 ·
he does not put them in "girls underwear" he merely issues all prisoners pink clothing - some systems use stripes or bright orange - Pink has long been known to be a psychologically calming color...

he gives them nutritively adequate meals, and he does it at an extremely low cost...

If you are arrested, and have been living in an un-air conditioned environment in AZ and you wind up in his jail how is that cruel?

his simplistic methods of housing criminals was to comply with a judges order to uncrowd the overcrowded jail - the people of Maricopa Co. have had a choice - build more facilities or let the prisoners go...

Arpaio for President...

He takes away the weight bench. I have never understood why you would let a prisoner workout to the point that when he gets out he's the size of a truck. Just stupid! All prisons should be like this!!

#18 ·
He's not liked by some of his officers, IIRC, for various reasons. One reason is because he requires all deputies to carry 24/7. He's also caught flak because the deputies he pulled for the Immigration Task Force had to come from somewhere. I recall reading that the action required the closing of a Sheriff's Office out in Wickenburg - which is why Aguila has got such a massive crime problem (the residents have taken the law into their own hands in quite a few cases).

Just playing Devil's Advocate, though. I wish I lived in Maricopa so I could say I have voted for him. I love him!

And as far as 'Cruel and Unusual Punishment'... if you think its cruel, don't commit crime. That's like arguing that we shouldn't be allowed to defend ourselves against an armed mugger because the justice system would only give them seven years in jail with cable tv, weights, 3 squares, and all the amenities the ACLU can provide.

I cannot see how anyone can consider providing shelter and food to prisoners 'cruel and unusual.' I suggest anyone who thinks Arpaio's management of the criminal scum to be untoward, they should google medievil torture, in particular the 'brass bull.' Then compare with America's sheriff.

I am very confused by this. I thought that a jail is place of detention prior to sentencing. Does this mean that there are innocents who have not had their day in court in Sheriff Arpaio's jail? Whatever happened with that case where he was accused of using his office to conceal ownership of commercial real estate? Didn't he go by the moniker "Dimebag Joe" when he worked for the DEA? I thought there were a series of lawsuits including one for wrongful death filed against the Maricopia jail?

From a Defensive Carry perspective, I think that the only thing here is too be very careful in understanding the law in Maricopia County, Arizona and to have a bail bondsman on speed dial. I would not want to have any sort of interaction with the Sheriff's office.

I retired from Maricopa County. Arpaio is a media hound buffoon. While he's done some amazing cost cutting measures, the county has paid out millions of dollars in lawsuits. The jails are a mixture of convicted (mostly misdemeanors) and folks who can't or won't bail out. They are not yet guilty, but they are not housed in Tent City. Arpaio made tons of friends when the inmates complained about the heat in the tents (which are military surplus). He stated that if our boys over in the sandbox can live in tents, so can his inmates. Joe's a media master. He brought Shaq in and made him an honorary deputy a few years ago. Now he actually lives here. He started chain gangs to clean roadways and vacant lots. He caters to the huge number of retirees in Maricopa County, and they ALL vote. Few of his employees care for him. His priorities do not lie with the deputy on the street. His recent campaign against illegal immigrants is doing wonders with his upcoming attempt at a fifth term in office. His office is rife with cronyism. The cities of Mesa and Phoenix have come across as catering to the illegals, Joe is making all the other departments look like fools when the blame first of all lies with the feds. Second, the cities in Maricopa County are scared to death to be labeled racist. That is why the illegal immigration problem has grown exponentially over the years. Joe is indeed a "get er done" guy, and is not afraid to step on toes doing it. He's really a mixed bag.

I think you have summed up Arpaio very well.

Sheriff Joe is the Best. He runs the Jail, like a Jail should be run. I worked at MCSO back in 1988, Madison Street Jail, prior to Sheriff Joe taking office. It was always crowded. Then I can remember him taking Office and I use to see him in the Malls, signing the Pink Underware, to make money for other Dept. matters. He really is the Man. Now I'm back in Michigan, working in a Jail again and our Sheriff now is afraid of everything, especially being sued, so he ahs the top staff making sure inmates get everything. It BS but I will be out soon. I also took my Corrections Academy at Durange Jail before working at MCSO.. What a 6 weeks program. It did help out. I was a road officer prior to moving to Az.

I agree.
My wife's younger brother is a MCSO and we couldn't be more pround of the work he's doing.

All this and still the inmates come. Must not be too bad.

And I have read that his SWAT team has some issues with minor crimes and getting the wrong address, one which resulted in a big house fire from a flash bang.

All inmates in VA who go out on work detail get cold bologna sandwiches every day. I know because they wash my medics and clean my bathrooms every other Wednesday. And VA is a state that kisses their butts on humane practice.

I used to work for VA corrections. One thing I agree with is letting them work out. Better free weights than me when they get bothered.

My only problem with that is that the inmate is huge when they leave prison and are probably in better shape and stronger than most LEOs. What does an inmate have to do beside eat, sleep and work out? Giving inmates free weights is settting them up to be harder to arrest when they are paroled, IMHO. If the inmate wants to work out, let them use bodyweight exercises. Plus, free weights are weapons if the inmates so choose. I have heard of cases where inmates have been killed by other inmates using free weights. One was on death row where one killer killed another killer with a weight plate and stomping his head. Another one is when an inmate was doing bench press and other inmates dropped a weight plate on his groin to cause him to drop the barbell and it landed on his throat.

Sheriff Joe is one of my heroes. He has been one of my heroes for years.

I would vote for him for President if he ran. Hell, I'd vote for him for just about any office he ran for. He knows how to get things done and the liberals hate him for it.

#35 ·
With what I've heard, I agree with him. It all sounds good, but it's hard to make any real calls about his character without knowing all of the facts (most of which none of us will ever know).

What I can say is that, at least around here, everything that I've heard has been in agreement with what he's doing. Which is a good swing from the general ACLU stance most people take. So, at the very least, whether he is an ethical person or not, it's good to hear someone going against the grain and not getting bad mouthed because of it.

If you think his jail is inhumane, you need to be incercerated in mexico,or a third world country where you might ssee a judge years after you are arrested if you're lucky and get railroaded in a kangaroo court.A lot of things that people do time for here in some countrys they take em out back and shoot them in the head, bullets are cheaper than feeding ya rice even though it's infested with maggots
