ST. PETERSBURG -- An armed suspect was shot and killed and a baliff injured at the St. Petersburg Judicial Center Wednesday afternoon, a courthouse spokesman says.

Gunfire was exchanged between the baliff and the suspect, who was stopped when the metal detector near the courthouse entrance sounded, according to Ron Stewart, Public Information Officer for the Pinellas County Court system.

He says the gunman was killed and the baliff was grazed in the shoulder. Both were taken to Bayfront Medical Center.

No word on any names, or the gunman's motive.

The Judicial Center is located at 544 1st Avenue North.

The courthouse is closed, as is a nearby court building.

All courthouse employees have been sent home for the day.

Yeah. "Secured" areas kill me. May keep some types out but the real psychos bent on killing everyone could easily take out the one or two metal-detector attendents (deputy sherrifs, around here) by surprise. Every else is target practice.
