Shooting scene where cop gunned down Unique Davis after he reportedly fired at police Saturday on Hancock St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Below, dead man's purported weapon.
A gunman who shot at cops outside a Brooklyn school before being killed by return fire had a history of gun and drug arrests, police said Sunday.
Unique Davis, 22, was slain by a veteran NYPD sergeant after blasting five rounds from a .38-caliber revolver at three cops outside a Bedford-Stuyvesant school Saturday, police said. Davis was arrested most recently last Monday on a marijuana possession rap, cops said.
The incident unfolded after Officers Robert Romano, Littlewood Pleasant and the sergeant were patrolling in an unmarked car, saw a man running with a gun near Dr. Ronald McNair School on Hancock St.
An officer jumped from the backseat and yelled, "Stop! Drop it! Put it down. Hands in the air," cops said.
But Davis fired at least once at the cops before a 15-foot fence near the school blocked his escape. Davis then ran back toward the cops and again opened fire, police said.
The sergeant, identified as Joseph Jette, fired the fatal shot that hit Davis in the head, police sources said.
Gladstone Ford, the landlord of a nearby building, said he heard an officer shouting.
"I heard him shout excited utterances, but I didn't hear it clearly enough to have heard his words or phrases definitively," Ford said. "It sounded like, 'Stop it, drop it. You little freak.' It was almost simultaneous with two shots."
Davis, who had at least three prior gun and drug arrests, was scheduled to appear in Brooklyn Criminal Court in September for his most recent marijuana possession charge.
Davis' brother Ronnie Davis was fatally shot in 2003 near the family's upstate Binghamton home, according to published reports.
Jette refused to speak to a reporter about the shooting incident yesterday.
