Police Shootout Results - **GRAPHIC PICS WARNING**

Warning! Very graphic pictures not for the young or squeamish!!

I found this on a local gun forum and wanted to ask the thoughts of other officers who might have seen similar results.

    http://www.defensivecarry.com/documents/officer.pdf

I hope this is not a repost and I have not seen this anywhere else before.

    My questions are:

    1. Why didnt the .40SW get more penetration that the coroners report stated?

    2. How the heck does ANYONE survive that long with that many bullets, especially 10 rounds of .223 hollow point/ballistic tips inside the body???
I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry.

Very interesting report, but the results are not uncommon. Page 21 sums things up well, however it a lot tougher to be accurate in a gun fight than Hollywood leads you to believe.

I think the last line of the report may the the most significant:
Shot placement is everything in a gunfight and always the key to stopping a threat effectively.

I took away from the report that nither ammo was 'good enough'.......am I right in this assumption?

I agree with cvhoss's assessment of the last line, AND SIXTO's take of shot placement during a gunfight.

In the end, you do the best that you can. The decision as to what to carry is a balance of what is comfortable for all day wear, and what you think will do the job. It gets awful hot here in Central Arkansas, and the ballistic vests are like your own personal sauna.

On the job, I carry a Glock in 40SW, because I'll probably encounter doors and other obstructions. Off duty, the choice depends on the outing. If I'm going to Little Rock, I'll usually carry my Glock in 40SW. But if I'm outside the city, just as often, I'll carry a 9MM or even a 380.

I just find it funny that a Google search for Defensive Systems Unit
    Ballistic Research Facility FBI Academy
turns up nothing but the above listed PDF, even the FBI Academy website lists every department BUT the one on the cover of the PDF...

Why is the only place this PDF is found on liquibyte.com

Not saying it's BS, but it's definitely odd...

yes shot placement is is correct , but during shoot outs it is tuff at times to get clean shots in - when under cover & concealment , unloading numerous shots like in the movies is not always the answer - laying out as much lead as you can - could get fumbling to reload - heart pounding , heavy breathing ,, thoughts of your next move - practice - practice as much as you can -- run or heavy exercise - then shoot moving targets - this will help mental & find your weak spots - & I have many of them - still working on them in my old age now - Hmmm things do change when we get alot older - L O L

Agreed JD. The story/pics may be totally legit, however the story may be a fictitious one that added some morgue photos for credibility. References should check out?

Another thing a bit odd, is the shattered humerus on his right arm. The NTOA blog says it was his left arm (which could be a typo), the xray's indicate right arm and some later text mentions his right arm. I see swelling in his right arm, and I can't see all the way around his arm, only about half-way, but there isn't a clear entry or exit wound that I can see. I do see a vague mark on the inside of his arm, but that could be blood print on his arm from contact with his chest.

I hope someone with a beef against .40 cal, hasn't put together an "official study" that intends to undermine .40 cal issued handguns?
