"The Academy" & LA Sheriffs Department Pistol Qualification Requrements

    Hi!

Like many other people, my wife and I watch "The Academy" on FOX. This is a reality show that tracks a class of recruits as they complete (or not complete) an 18 week LA Sheriffs Department academy.

We were watching it today when one of the recruits was having trouble qualifying on the range. My wife was like, "I can do that!" I was like, "yea, I can do that too!" It looks easy but without details, we can't know for sure.

Our question is: What does it take to qualify? If you don't know the specifics of the LASD standards, any relevant info will do.

    Thanks in advanced.

I don't know about LAPD. But I am a firearms instructor for my departments firearms qualifications. Most civilians who carry concealed wouldn't have any trouble making the qualification. In fact most people who have very little firearms experience wouldn't have trouble completing the qualification. I know this because we have put first time shooters through the course, with our guidance and they have preformed better than some of our officers.

So what are the qualification standards you use?

Here in VA they shoot a DCJS Qualification this is shot on a Q target and you shoot 60 shots. Each shot is worth 5 points therefore your max scor=300, and a minimum Qual IIRC is 220.

The Gun shop I work at since we have a DCJS instructor on staff we have to shoot the DCJS course and score a min 285. We also have to shoot the PPS course and only can miss 2 times.

There also a lot of Federal Agency Guards that qualify at our place. t They used to shoot on the TRANS TARG II and now they shoot on what looks like the FBI Target
