Off duty detective shoots robbery suspect
Police Shoot Robbery Suspect - FOX30Online.com Jacksonville News Leader
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Bullet holes line the outside of The Chicken Koop on Dunn Avenue where police say an armed robbery took place that ended with the suspect, 19-Year-Old Corea Johnson getting into a gunfight with polilce.
"The fact is the suspect aimed his gun at Detective Oliver and fired shots," said JSO Chief Rick Graham.
It all began around 11:00 Saturday night.
Police say Johnson walked into the Chicken Koop wearing a ski mask, took the manager to the back of the restaurant at gunpoint and demanded money.
They say he also fired a shot missing the manager and then ran out.
As he was leaving the restaurant, an off-duty police officer on his way home pulled into the parking lot and saw Johnson leaving the restaurant with another person.
Police are not saying who the other person was...but they say Detective Oliver saw Johnson point a gun right at him.
"Rather than surrender to Detective Oliver and be taken into custody, Johnson chose to engage in a gun battle," said Graham.
Several shots were exchanged.
The officers car was hit but the suspect missed the officer.
Johnson was hit several times then took off.
The mask that police say he used during the robbery was found on the ground near a Popeyes.
A 9mm gun was also recovered.
Police eventually got a 911 call from the suspect's father's house just down the street from the restaurant.
That is where officers caught up with Johnson.
Some say its a given, if you point a gun at an officer, you can expect to get shot.
"I think its poor decisions. People just not making good decisions. Police are here for a reason to protect us but people are making bad decisions. Everybody has a job to do," said Willie Beaton who lives near the Chicken Koop.
Johnson is listed in critical condition at Shands.
He faces charges of armed robbery and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.
Johnson's father told police his son was recently fired from the Chicken Koop and was going there to settle things and get his money.
Guess his boy settled up. Daddy must be proud!
