Colleton County sheriff's deputy shot, killed

From Colleton County: Deputy sheriff Dennis Compton.

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Colleton County Sheriff's deputy was killed in the line of duty early Thursday morning and his killer is still on the run.

Police and sheriff deputies have set up check points around Colleton County, and they will remain in effect indefinitely.

SLED is assisting in the investigation, and has been on the scene all morning with their K-9 unit and fugitive search team.

Nearly 75 officers and deputies from various agencies and departments, are also helping with the initial investigation, including the Charleston Co. and Dorchester Co. Sheriff's Offices.

Deputy sheriff Dennis Compton was gunned down while responding to a call at 699 Sunflower Drive in Smoak, South Carolina.

The Colleton Co. Sheriff's Office received a call around 3am Thursday from an alarm company that an alarm had gone off at aforementioned residence.

No one was home at the time, but the homeowner's son also received a call from the alarm company, and came out to the scene.

He called the sheriff's office and told them Compton had been shot.

According to Colleton County Sheriff George Malone, this is a rare occurrence because the last deputy killed in the line of duty was in the mid-1970s.

Sad, truly sad. It is good that the deputy got off 5 rounds. That means that he was aware of the situation. We tend to get "false alarm syndrome" a lot. Basically, when we get called out to 5 false alarms a night we tend to lose our situational awareness in those types of settings. Sad, but true. God be with his family.

Very true... alarms and people who don't know how to use them drive me nuts. Sometimes we spend an entire shift chasing down and checking out false alarms.

Especially during electrical storms. A close lightning strike sets off any alarm around it for a pretty good ways.

This is a VERY rural area he was dispatched to that evening/early morning.

Yes, I was slightly relieved to hear he was aware of the situation. They have a suspect, but as far as I know he hasn't been located yet.

Sad to hear another protector went down.

    Rest in peace, Deputy Compton.

I hope the perpetrator faces swift justice.

    Update!!

Judge denies bond for suspects in deputy's death

WALTERBORO, SC (AP) - Solicitor Duffie Stone says a judge has denied bond for two men charged in the shotgun slaying of a South Carolina sheriff's deputy.

Eighteen-year-old Jacoby Jermaine Fields of Walterboro and 19-year-old Travis Javon Harris of Smoaks appeared before Circuit Judge Ferrell Cothran on Tuesday morning.

They are charged in the death of 39-year-old Colleton County Deputy Dennis Compton. He was fatally shot after responding to a burglary alarm on Aug. 6 at a home near Smoaks.

Stone said the men also face three burglary counts, one stemming from an earlier burglary in which the shotgun used in the slaying was stolen.

Stone said the gun was later located behind Harris' house. Stone said he has not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.
