I think you'll regret it if you don't live off base. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to enjoy another culture.

more than likely will live off base to let her enjoy the sights and everything else. So should be a interesting assignment for the wife and I both.

We lived off base for two years of a 21/2 year tour because of base housing being in short supply. We rented off base in a village right on the Adriatic and our house was about two blocks from the sea. You're right about the food! I still remember the little restaurants we spent a lot of evenings at.

I lived in Latiano in '67 and '68 as an Air Force dependant of San Vito AS. (13/14 yrs old) Didn't know it was still there.
The Vigilante station was across the street from us, and since they liked us, we never had any problems. (Note: "Vigilante" in Italian just means "vigilant," or "watchful" - the "Contract Security Guard Union" as we would think of them. They have a lot more power and authority than the "MallCops" that we think of as Security guards - don't cross them!!) The people were wonderful, friendly, big-hearted, generous - but that was a previous generation, don't know what's there now.
After that we went to the Pacific theatre for some years.
I hope you enjoy the country as much as I remember that we did.

    Stay safe,

    Chuck Brick.
Why do I use 230 gr. for my .45acp?
    Because I can't find a source of 250 gr!
