PA State Trooper Killed
Pa. State Trooper Killed Near Pittsburgh
Pennsylvania State Trooper Fatally Shot During Traffic Stop Near Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH Dec 12, 2005 — The body of a state trooper was found near his cruiser after he pulled over a car early Monday, police said.
Cpl. Joseph Pokorny was found dead about 2 a.m. near an exit of Interstate 279 about 5 miles southwest of the city, officials said.
"I just want to say that we are going to work this investigation until the suspects involved in this cowardly murder are behind bars," said state police Col. Jeffrey B. Miller.
Pokorny, 45, who had been a trooper for more than 22 years, was found by a Carnegie borough police officer. The officer saw Pokorny's car door open and found the trooper's body outside of the car.
Pokorny had called in information on a black 2001 Mercury sedan minutes earlier, and police were reviewing tapes of the call to determine why he had pulled it over.
Police were also looking for the sedan, while officers from several departments joined in a manhunt in woods near the shooting, authorities said. Police said the trooper's gun was also missing, although they couldn't say if that was the weapon used to shoot Pokorny.
WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh showed police escorting a person from the woods and a police car driving away with someone in the back. Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said he didn't have any information on that stop or whether it was related to the shooting.
Late Monday morning, police surrounded an apartment building and cordoned off streets in Pittsburgh's South Side neighborhood, which is about 5 miles from where the shooting occurred.
Police took into custody a man and women and led them from the scene, although officials wouldn't immediately comment about whether it was related to the trooper's shooting.
Associated Press writer Dan Lovering contributed to this report.

Addition:
This story is still unfolding. Police have pulled out all stops to get into custody who perped this murder & left this trooper dead on the side of the road.
Local & State Police were actually boarding buses to find the person/persons responsible for gunning down 45 year old 22 year Trooper Vet with 2 kids.
His brother played for the PGH. STEELERS for a while.
This Trooper was a great family man & Father...& very active in his community. He was a patrol supervisor.
He had started a pursuit & was involved in an active pursuit & 8 minutes later he was found dead.
Police either already have some suspects or "persons of interest" to question.
S.W.A.T. already surrounded one apartment building & have to people in custody but, I don't know their involvment in this murder.
They have the abandoned Black Sable aready at Forensics.
I HOPE whoever did this TRIES to resist arrest & saves the taxpayers some money.

My prayers go out to his family and friends. To his fellow officers as well, along with this thought : good hunting.
For his killer, I hope for a speedy apprehension, a speedy trial, and a speedy execution.

QK - read this in today's paper, with a heavy heart. Last PA Trooper to be killed was back in 2002. I believe some 91 troopers have been slain over time.
I feel for his family, friends and associates - this was no way to be taken out - sounding as it does pretty much right now something akin to execution. I wonder how much if anything will be discovered about those 8 minutes.
RIP Cpl. Joseph Pokorny

They will never give up. We had a sergeant murdered onduty in L.A. and it took 23 years but they got the killer. He knew they were coming for him and he finally did an honorable thing and gave himself the coup de grace with a .357...decent of him, really

I hope they get the creep or creeps.
A few years ago, just up the road from me, an Ohio a Trooper was killed execution style. they caught the scumbag, was tired and sentenced to death. This creature almost escaped from Death Row in the prison near me. Too bad, because I suspect there would have been a hunting season.
Just the other day the court system overturned his conviction.
When the get the scum I hope the PA courts are smarter than Ohio.

Just my personal "spider sense" gut feeling is that they are going to catch a damn rat here very soon.

From today's paper QK I'd reckon they are pulling a load of old lags and budding felons - looking for leads.
I doubt any stone will stay unturned with this. I sure hope for substantial retribution - maybe slow vearing towards terminal!

UPDATE:
They already have the "alleged" suspected murderer in custody.
Looks like he is going to be a guy paroled early & without having to meet his parole requirements due to a law change by our great Democratic Governor Ed Rendell.

QKShooter,
I would hope the pro-gun crowd would use this to help defeat the "honorable" Ed Rendell in the next election if the alleged perp is convicted. My prayers for the family...

Reading in today's paper QK - they are still not sure if it was the trooper's gun used against him - but they did refer to two shots - chest and neck - and supposedly he was wearing his body armor. More facts needed yet.
