    Two Niagara Falls Officers Shot

    Two Niagara Falls Officers Shot
    Reported by: WROC TV
    Sunday, Feb 8, 2009 @09:47am EST

Two Niagara Falls Police Officers were shot early Saturday morning during a reported domestic dispute at a Niagara Falls Home. A man and woman inside the South Avenue home were also shot.

Officer Walt Nichols is an 18-year veteran and assigned to the traffic unit. He was shot in the upper body by a blast from a shotgun. He just recently returned from a tour of duty overseas. Officer Nichols underwent surgery at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) Saturday morning and is listed in stable condition.

Officer Michael Bird is an 8-year veteran and assigned to the k-9 unit. He suffered facial injuries. He was treated and released from Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

Investigators say the officers were shot from a porch on South Avenue when they arrived on scene just after 1:30am. The officers then returned fire, resulting in the shoot-out.

The shooter, 34-year-old Adam Hamilton was wounded by police. He is currently in police custody at ECMC and is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Hamilton's ex-girlfriend, 27-year-old Stephanie Turk is listed in critical condition at ECMC with multiple gunshot wounds and a possible stab wound. Police say she was apparently assaulted by Hamilton before police arrived.

    Yep!

My thumb down was for the domestic dispute scenario. Not the LEO's action.

Domestic dispute, probably one of the most dangerous calls an LEO responds to from what I have been told. Glad these officers survived it. Hope they have a quick recovery.

We were always taught that Domestic Violence calls were the most dangerous of calls. As an LEO, and sent to many DV calls, it is true.

    I always dreaded them!
