    Sunny Fort Polk Louisiana

Just curious if anybody's spent time down at Polk. I'll be heading down there for my PL time. Won't know if I'll be with the 10th Mountain boys the 509th until I get there. It's still a long time off- still gotta go through the sausage grinder at Benning first.

I've heard all the horror stories already, but I was curious what yall's impressions might be. I'm pretty excited.

    How's the gator huntin' ???

I thought they closed that dump down! I was there in the early 70's and it was a nightmare. They must have rebuilt every structure there, they were trashed back then. Nearest town is Leesville, an entire city of nothing but bars and prostitutes. Have fun!

AZ, you know they would never tear them down, historical monuments or some other thing. But they would repaint everything, that would make it just like new!!

I live close enough to Ft Polk that I could hear the bombing range activity going on this morning in the distance. In fact I was talking to a buddy of mine and he mentioned some guys that he knew were contracted with the gov't to do some extensive remodeling and new construction of housing on the base. I think that project has been going on for a while.

I don't think I've ever been on the base, though I've been to Leesville a few times. If you get bored there, drive 45 minutes northeast to Natchitoches....very nice downtown/river area, historical homes, college town, good restaurants.

Drive east to Alexandria, they have a pretty good mall there (though it's been a long time since I've been to it) and nearby they have Security Sporting Goods near the Mall with a nice selection of firearms.

I spent 4+ years at Ft Polk with the 258th MP Co (Corps)

Most of the Time I was deployed with CENTCOM, or ARCENT. My fondest memories of the place were that I was deployed so much.

    Need I say more?

I did 3 rotations at JRTC. The post stinks!! The weather is miserable; hot, humid and the stench of swamp will be on you for a while. It rains a lot in the fall. Great training weather and conditions!! BTW, you can catch a Space A flight on the mosquitoes, they are huge.

No I have to disagree with that they just pick you up and take you away.
