Helpful New York City janitor holds cop's gun during arrest

A New York janitor found himself holding a policeman's gun when the officer needed a free hand to handcuff a suspect.

The handoff happened at the end of a wild chase through Manhattan yesterday.

Police spent an hour trying to catch a motorist who struck a taxi and a jogger, then fled on foot after hitting a van.

Police say the suspect slipped into a basement and tried to disguise himself as a janitor when the real maintenance man spotted him and went for help.

The officer who responded was trying to cuff the suspect with his gun drawn when the weapon wound up in hands of janitor Placido Contreras.

Contreras tells the New York Post he only held the gun for a moment.Co

Is the janitor perhaps embellishing his story?

It would not be the first time, nor the last, that someone embellishes a story to make themselves look better. From what I've read I'm certainly willing to consider that this may have happend as reported, but I'd need proof. No, a news article isn't proof little grasshopper.

I think if I were the LEO, I would've had the janitor handcuff the bg while I control the gun.

    Hmmmm !

A NY LEO would do that ??? Unless the janitor was a good friend, a former cop ...

Very bad idea on the leos part. I would never hand my weapon to a civilian i didnt know. Especially not while making an arrest.

    Everybody is missing the obvious:

    LEO: "Here hold my gun."
Any of Us: It's OK. I have mine.

You have to make the shot when fire is smoking, people are screaming, dogs are barking, kids are crying and sirens are coming.

As the saying goes...Any port in a storm. If you need help, get help. Even if it's from a janitor.

Maybe the janitor was a part of the Secret NY City Sanitation and Janitorial Tactical Squad.(SNYSJTS - pronounced Snice Jets - for short) I think that's who Gecko45 is working for these days.
