    Help me find a .40

Hey guys. I just got on a podunk police department in IN. I have to furnish my own .40 or .45 sidearm. I have Keltec 9mm and dont know what is a good option for me. I only have about 500.00 to spend. Heard Glock 23 and S&W M&P were good options. Ill trust your opinions......

We carry H&K P2000 in .40 with the LEM trigger. I used to hate it, but it grew on me really quickly.

I'm not a Glock fan, but were I in your shoes, I'd probably carry a G21sf. If you are set on a .40, then a G22.

I would avoid a Springfield as a service weapon.
The preceding post may contain sarcasm; it's just better that way. However, it is still intended with construction and with the Love of my L-rd Y'shua.

Glock 23 or the M&P40. I use to own a M&P and the ergonomics were great. However, you want to shoot it and see if you like the trigger. Some people don't like it but it's not too bad. I have a G23 and I love it.

    G22 gives you 15 + 1 and is a good reliable weapon.

    Glock 23

If you had a little more to spend I would add SIG P229 to the list.

I'd suggest finding a little more money and getting a higher quality (IMHO) gun than the ones you listed. Go for the Sig P220, P229 or P250.

    Nothing beats a Sig!

I like the SIG P220 and P229, but Glock wins hands down above a P250. The P250 has had way too many problems.

Here's two years worth of posts on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the P250...

My philosophy on a .40 cal handgun…If you want a polymer gun, get a Glock. If you want metal, get a P229.

I personally prefer the P250 over ANY Glock, but I put it last on my list because of the guns I put, it is my last choice. I personally prefer the .45 to the .40, that's why I put the P220 first. I would trust my life to a P250 before a Glock simply because of my experiences with Glock.

Make sure your hands are large enough for the weapon you choose.

Before going with an XD, or any other weapon, find out about armorer support. There are plenty of Glock armorers, spread all over. There are quite a few SIG armorers. Last I heard, there was NO armorer system in place for the XD. S&W used to have a famous system of armorers for their revolvers and earlier autos. I am not sure about the semiauto M&P pistols.

Sending your one and only duty pistol to an importer/factory for service is no fun. If you choose a pistol that requires you to do so, better budget for a SPARE duty pistol. I have three SIG P229s on my qual card, even though there are local armorers. I paid between $700 and $800 for the first one, in 2004. The subsequent ones were custom shop variants which killed off a thousand dollar bill each time, but the P229 fits my hand, and may be the very best choice in .40, regardless of price.

Good luck in your new job and career.

I absolutely agree that in the .40 caliber, the P229 is the BEST!
