US firm says handheld puke ray is ready to go ? The Register

A US industrial laser company says it has developed a functional puke-ray system, ideal for use by cops or military personnel wishing to take down their opponents without shooting them. The firm proposes to issue the "non lethal light fighting technology" in two form factors - light-sabre/torch and blaster-pistol.

The so-called Dazer Laser™ technology comes from Laser Energetics Inc (Laser Energetics), of New Jersey, which has been supplying more conventional laser equipment since 1991. Now, however, the company is pleased to announce its new Defender™ and Guardian™ chunder-beam weapons

    According to Laser Energetics' statement:

These non-lethal weapons have the ability to control the threat at ranges of 1 meter to 2400 meters (model dependent). The Dazer Laser™ - Light Fighting Technologies - emit a green “eye safe” laser beam, that is shaped into approximately a 1 foot to 8 foot Dazer Zone™ (model dependent) which when focused on the threats eyes, the threats vision is temporarily impaired, their balance is effected, and they become affected by nausea. This controls the threat making it difficult for them to manoeuver. The Ultimate Non – Lethal Weapon.
"This life saving non-lethal weapon will help all branches of the military, law enforcement, correctional facilities, security, border patrol, piracy control, homeland security, airport security and much more," says Laser Energetics CEO Robert Battis.

Battis says that his regurge-ray weapons are better than the well-known Taser electrojolt stungun as they have a longer effective range and aren't single-shot. If an embattled cop, soldier etc. misses the target at first he can simply swing the dazzle-beam onto his opponent's face and leave him slipping and stumbling helplessly in a self-generated chunky puddle.

The Defender™ is the ray-pistol model, perhaps effective to 2400m; the Guardian™ is the cylindrical job which emits its belly-scrambling dazer rays from one end like a torch. The Guardian™ will work out to 100m, according to the Laser Energetics pdf brochure (http://www.laserenergetics.com/pdf/d...erbrochure.pdf). Both models also have a "searchlight" illumination mode - presumably without the nauseating special sauce. There's no word yet on price.

Sounds good. I could see using it in a less than lethal situation.

If the guns come into play though, guns will be the answer.

Maybe it'll be cheap enough that most depts can actually afford it and not have to rely on government grants.

No. That would do irreparable damage to the eyes and a terrible image would be forever ingrained in the brain, costing millions in doctor and physiologist fees. I doubt that anyone so inflicted could ever fully recover.

On the other hand, that image might be a guarantee that whoever did get the laser in the eyeballs might cease their evil ways for the rest of their life. The possibility of it happening again would be a fate that no one would ever want to endure more than once.

I'm afraid that would constitute cruel and inhumane punishment. I think I'd rather be shot than have to live the rest of my life with that vision in my head!

The Dazer Laser™ - Light Fighting Technologies - emit a green "eye safe" laser beam

Just for clarification, the fact that the beam is green, 532 nm wavelength, does not make it eye safe. It is laser power that makes it 'safe.'

I haven't looked at the specifications, but the claim seems nonsensical. Any laser that has such a wide divergence will necessarily have its power distributed over a large area. Class 3B lasers, ones that require specific warning symbols with a 200 milliradian divergence will not generate enough power in the eye to do anything but make some look the other way. No one can conveniently carry a class 4 laser as the power supply would be enormous.

A gun is far more effective.

I dont know much about lasers. I do know that you can see the green laser at 100 yards quite well when the red laser is invisible at that distance.

It may be true that the green laser wont damage the eye, but it could still be powerful enough to make you sick to your stomach. Its not a focused beam like a conventional laser but more of a broad sweep so the eye takes it over the whole eye rather than on a pinpoint spot.

Strobe lights can make you sick, but they dont seem to do much damage.

With the advances in technology that are happening, its probably just a matter of time until its just another tool that the cops use. It took what...10 years for Tasers to see widespread use?

There are times when you dont want to have to shoot somebody for being stupid. With a good range, say out to 100 yards, iI could see it being useful in several ways.

Sounds like a great idea except for the fact that your creating a biohazard.

Ok he's disabled and glazed in vomet lets throw him in the squad car. Thats gonna be fun to clean out at the end of shift. Not to mention the health concerns with coming into contact with bodily fluids.

IMHO they developed a tool that makes a LEO's job more challenging.

Now if they want to add these on turrets on a fence bordering Mexico i can see that as being a good use. suddenly all the Mexicans think illegal border crossing sicken them.

Or maybe I choose to close my eyes or turn my back on you.

I don't think there will be much use for this particular type of thing. Especially after a few cops get puked on a time or two, and have to deal with that.

The chunk gun will remain in the car or holster if it ever sees any real duty at all.

From their website, the article is just about word for word from the companies press release. However the article didn't include the following that was on the companies website. I love the bold section.

    About Laser Energetics, Inc.:
Laser Energetics has and continues to develop a comprehensive and strategic laser product line that addresses laser applications in Industry, Science, Medicine, Homeland Security and the Military. The Company has had a primary focus on its Alexandrite laser technology.
