If the Iraqi's can hold it all together then it is a great thing, a victory even. Saddam is gone. I pray that they hold it together and become a strong democracy for that region.

I feel the same way GreenHorn. I think we've probably overstayed our welcome over there.

I hope they can hold it together too.

I think our exit from Iraq may be premature to say the least.

Looking at it from a long term diplomatic standpoint, and no, I don't work for the State Department, what message does this send to our allies and enemies?

Look at how long we've been in Korea, Japan and other nations, even in Europe. If other nations sense that we will "cut and run" at the first opportunity I fear the message this sends will have grave longlasting effects on our relations with other nation states.

In short, I don't think this will bode well for us in the future.

Uh... It's my understanding that we're leaving the population centers... not the country. Am I wrong?

Biker... Don't you agree that our presence in Muslim nations is a different situation? Should we stay where we're obviously not wanted?

Yeah, I re-read the article. It looks like we'll still be in the country, but out of the cities. The Iraqis will be responsible for their own security it looks like. We are leaving some troops behind to assist in continuous training and support.

My opinion on muslim nations is not for print.

As far as going where we are not wanted, that too is not fit for print.

I hate to break the news, but the US is not pulling out of Iraq tomorrow. Oh wait... CNN already broke that news in the linked article.

    Biker,

It's not Muslims that we have a problem with. It is the fundamentalist that are the ones that are the problem. Get rid of those and then we can discuss peace.

There are alot of Muslims that are not anti American. Some even serve in our armed services.

Iraq is going to fold up faster than a 'card table' after a bridge night...you'll see!
These people have been busy fighting someone/anyone for thousands of years, and it isn't going to stop just yet...I'm just sayin'...

Take this as gospel - The moment we leave Iraq, Iran and the other powers behind the war on terror will destabilize the region again and install a religious theocracy; the real danger to me has always been Iran, not North Korea. North Korea may rattle their sabers and launch a couple of practice shot, but what they really want is recognition, and food. They are literally starving over there. Iran, on the other hand, have an axe to grind with us, and with Israel. They will continue to play their games on the international scene, but I promise you, once we turn our backs, they will make their move and probably nuke Israel, or cities on the East coast, like DC. I think in the scheme of things this is why George W. took out Saddam when he did, to give us a foothold in that region so we would not have to ask anyone's permission to fly over someone's airspace to take care of business..... It also served a secondary purpose to shift the war on terror into a theater where we could dictate the terms of the fight and we could win. It is going to be very difficult if not impossible to win in Afghanistan given history and the terrain, no matter how "focused" the missions are......

Just my .02; keep buying those weapons and stock up on food and provisions, cause we are fixing to fight the war to end all wars, whether we like it or not.
