Ft. Benning GA, here I come

I just swore in to the Army as Infantry, under a 3 year contract, and I leave for OSUT at Ft. Benning on 20091007. I'm going in as an E-4 Specialist, and getting a sizable chunk of my college debt paid off, although I know it's not about the bonuses. Wish me luck. I welcome anyone's advice, although I already know I need to start PT.

Who thinks I'm crazy for going combat arms with a 99 on the ASVAB?

Not me, I did the same. Turned out to be a smart move. It was easier to gain rank and make more money.
The only thing I think you are crazy for is signing up to go in the summer, but I did the same thing too. Fall is much nicer time of year in Georgia.
tell my old pals at Benning I said hello.

My daughter is in boot camp as we speak. bring SHARPE PENS. If your stuff gets lost or stolen, you will get yelled at and will have to replace it. That was a recommendation from a military site. Put you name in everything, it will discourge theft.

Also bring throat lozenges, Use it like candy or when your throat is hoarse. Its allowed since it is not really candy.

Do jump school as long as you're there. Ft. Bragg is a nice assignment. Congrats on the great enlistment bennies. Took me almost three years to make E4, but that was back in the 70's when they were giving felons the choice of prison or the Army.

Congratulations on your decision.. I used to visit Ft Benning occasionally during the late 60s and was always impressed that nobody walked - they ran everywhere they went. Get in good shape:)

Best of luck. Yep, Benning does get hot. Been there, done all that many years ago.

    Good luck!!!!
Advice? Push ups, sit ups, and running - lots of each!

Out of curiosity, how are you going in as an E-4?

    Just some quick points:

    1) Basic/AIT begins on October 2nd, so I do get to avoid summer. Which brings me to the next question, what is Georgia like during the fall/winter months?

    2) Having a Bachelor's degree gives me the E-4 rank upon swearing in, but this is only available with the Army (and from what I've heard, being an Eagle Scout can get you E-3, although I'm not sure about that). It's a little perk for those of us who decide to start toward the bottom of the totem pole as opposed to commissioning right away. My future experiences will determine whether I put in my 3 and leave, reenlist, or attempt to become an officer. I'm not opposed to any of those choices right now.

    3) I will be requesting every additional training that I think I can survive. I'm not currently a strong runner, but if my training before and during Basic allow me to be competitive in Airborne or even Ranger schools, I'd like to attend.

    4) I am VERY excited about weapons training, but that should be obvious.

Well that explains it. I knew there was a number of ways to get a bump in rank when you enlist (when I joined the AF, back in the day, I got E-3 for signing up for 6 yrs instead of 4), I just didn't know they'd bump you all the way to E-4. That gives you a heck of a head start, take advantage of it, and remember to respect the rank, it brings responsibility with it.

If you really want to get into shape, check out Fatal Fitness. It's the creation of a USAF TACP and is very effective. My son and guys from his flight use their exercises and workouts. Fatal Fitness

Crossfit is another site they use, lots of good info there as well. http://www.crossfit.com/

Now that is real rank/grade deflation. When I went in the Army, almost fifty years ago, a bachelors deg. would come very close to getting you the gold bar. Might want to check farther on your options.

As mentioned, go jump and Ranger if you are up to it. The Ranger program is awesome. Best of luck.
