I work for the State Department, and we own a BOATLOAD of 870s. Maybe that's because we have a whole bunch of sworn law enforcement officers, as does the IRS........

Trying to figure out how this is news.
A man fires a rifle for many years, and he goes to war. And afterward he turns the rifle in at the armory, and he believes he's finished with the rifle. But no matter what else he might do with his hands - love a woman, build a house, change his son's diaper - his hands remember the rifle.

It's news because A) most Americans don't know the IRS has an armed investigative division, B) most Americans dislike/distrust the IRS, and C) it conjures up images of this:

Before anyone gets smug about what Americans don't know about their government, tread lightly. I'm sure each one of us could point out MANY things to each other that we don't know about USG.

My wife originally told me about the IRS Criminal Enforcement Division years ago. She described it as "accountants with guns".

OK I'll play. EPA has LEOs. Imagine raiding a toxic waste site. Think muzzle discipline.

I have a friend who is a SA with IRS CID. He was as well outfitted with arms and investigative tools as my friend who was an FBI agent. The Feds take care of their Criminal Investigators.

Hmm, let me think about this for a minute...
OK police investigators carry firearms, this is the Investigative Division, they may be dealing with a criminal element.
It seems to make perfect sense to me.
