They are making a movie of our home town hero.....
US Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone, 28 years old and who recieved the Medal OF Honor, Navy Cross and Purple Heart for his gallantry above and beyond in combat at Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal staving off 3,000 Japanese with his Machine gun and Colt .45 after his unit was reduced to just him and two other men. He was killed defending his men and their position.

Thanks for the post. Those pics give a small taste of the brutal images of war...not pretty. What the public sees on TV is a lot of explosions and smoke.

Obviously very rare indeed. I also was unaware of the up close photo's of the Suribachi Highway that was built after the battle. One has to wonder, what happened to all those G.I.'s in the photo's. Where are they today? Thanks for the post.
May we never forget those in uniform who protect us night and day in lands far away. And those in all wars who paid the supreme sacrifice in defense of our country. May God Bless our Troops and First Responders.

The survivors? We're losing them at a fast pace these days. An 18 yo in Feb 1945 would be 83 this year. The average GI in WW II was 26 which would make him 91 today. Both of my grandfathers and all 4 great uncles that served are gone now.
Thanks to the OP for the link. The stories behind some of them are amazing. I saw the account of the banzai attack at the airfield on TV. Incredible story.

    Yup!

All my combat relatives from WWII are gone, now. I have a 94 yo aunt that was an Army nurse, but never in a combat zone, who is still with us. God bless her. She still a pistol.

My dad, who died in Dec., was a Seabee and built the pit on Tinian used to load the atomic bombs on Enola Gay and Bock's Car. I can think of a million questions I should have asked him.

Excellent link, thank you so much. More people need to see these sorts of images and remember those who have fought and died, and still are, for our freedoms.
